What are some of the CHEAPER northeast schools?

I'm in VA right now and I definitely don't want to go South. Tonight, however, my parents informed me that I probably wouldn't be able to afford any of the northern schools I applied to (AFTER I got my applications done and sent in for all of them...thanks a lot, Mom and Dad). Are there any schools east of the Mississippi and north of VA that have tuition under $20000 or $22000? I know there are plenty in the south, but haven't come across any in the North yet.

The only requirement is that they have at least decent Journalism, Creative Writing, English, or Political Science programs.

Also, don't recommend William and Mary to me, because as much as I'd love to go there (and love the price, as well) I simply don't have the grades for it.

There are tons of other great schools in Virginia though.

I knew I would get that reply. I don't mean to disrespect your opinion or anything, but I really hate Virginia schools in general.

UVA is too preppy (and out of my reach anyway).
GMU is not challenging enough.
Virginia Tech is in the middle of nowhere (not something that I want)
Mary Washington is supposedly an absolute hell (made Princeton Review's Least Happy Students, Homogenous Student Body, etc. lists)
JMU is too much of a UVA off-shoot (same type of students).

I don't mean to be too picky here, because I'm really not picky in general, but I've researched Virginia schools to a great degree and I can't find any that suit me. I'm applying to VCU as a safety, but other than that I'm really looking north.

Are you ineligible for financial aid or scholarships, becuase if that's what your parents can contribute, then I think the colleges will understand that.

What schools did yo apply to? Did you file the FASFA form? Did you here back from/contact the financial aid office? If you can answers those questions, then I can help yo from there.

My parents are filling out the FAFSA form now, but since both of them and myself all have jobs, they're not expecting much.

They don't make enough that we're exactly "rich", but they make just enough that we're probably not going to get 10 or 20 thousand dollars towards college either.

I have applied to George Washington and American, and I'm highly considering applying to Eugene Lang as well.

The EFC calculator said they would be responsible for paying around $20000, but even then, I can't see that GWU would just give me $25000 in grants and loans to make up the difference so I could attend there.

Burninup, the EFC is a standard number that finance will interpret their own way. If they meet 100% of financial aid, then they will have some form of financial aid packets that will assist you in paying for college.

Here's the general statement I have from George Washington, please note that it is ironic that you are worried about money, but applied to the most exspnsive school in the country.

Financial Aid
Of all full-time matriculated undergraduates who enrolled in 2002,: 4,826 applied for aid, 3,633 were judged to have need, 2,921 had their need fully met
In 2002,: 1859 non-need-based awards were made

Cost of Attendance Less Outside Resources Less EFC = *Need *

Average percent of need met: 94%
Average financial aid package: $29,206
Average need-based loan: $7317
Average need-based gift aid: $16,744
Average non-need-based aid: $12,291
Average indebtedness upon graduation: $25,943
Financial aid deadline: 2/1

you could look up penn state, i think that they have tuition in that range

try ycp.edu

Wells (upstate new york) is around $14,000 and it's no longer a women's college. It is definitely small though.

If you don't like the schools in VA, you probably won't like the less pricey schools in the East. York College in PA is in the price range you note, and offers excellent merit aid to top applicants. It is not highly competitive, but I've heard good things about it. It is not exactly in the middle of the "action", however.

I would still revisit the VA. schools, but if not the SUNY schools (I just looked up Suny-Buffalo) fits this price range. Some small LACs, usually isolated may be priced at 30,000, but give 10,000 in merit aid to many. An example is Elizabethtown College in Pa. Don't take my word for 30,000-I did not look it up, and I feel like the schools raise their prices everytime I blink :)

I wouldn't count out the schools you've applied to until you see their financial aid offer, some can be quite generous even if you don't think you'll get a lot.

try sunys?

Rutgers, UToronto, McGill, UConn, Univ of Pittsburgh

Many of the oos state schools will run near 30,000. Canada is another good possibility.
