I decided not to enroll at any of the schools I was accepted to for fall '09. Therefore, I am back to the drawing board. When applying to schools this past winter, I think I may have underestimated my competitiveness as a transfer applicant. As such, I applied to schools I thought I could get into--not necessarily where I wanted to attend.

So, can anyone suggest any viable 'reaches' for me to consider?

Stats:

3.66 GPA from a NY CC; 60 credits; upward trend (all A's since spring of '08).

Will be majoring in philosophy.

I have ZERO EC's--literally, none. However, I do have extensive work experience.

I have never taken the SAT's or the ACT's.

My H.S. GPA was a 65%.

If it matters, I was admitted to UGA, Clemson, and U. South Carolina with a 3.54 and 45 credits.

You need to make an appointment with the transfer counselors at your CC and ask them where students with your profile have been admitted. Ask them if there are any articulation agreements in place for your major.

Reaches is such a nebulous (and relative) term that it’s hard for us to really respond in earnest. Research some specific schools that appeal to you and then look at the data of the incoming freshmen and transfers to give you an idea of where you stand as far as the hard factors are concerned. We’ll be happy to give you pointers and perhaps a more balanced perspective on your chances, but you need to put some time in and do your homework. Good luck!

happymomof1-I moved to FL, so meeting with a transfer counselor isn’t really an option–although maybe I could try calling. And my school only has articulation agreements with the SUNY schools and Cornell-- neither of which I have any desire to attend.

wayward trojan- I honestly have done all that research, but it really hasn’t helped much.

drek’thar- wow, see now thats something I would have never expected; I would have never thought that applying to Columbia would be worth my time with my stats.

Do schools like UNC-CH, UCLA, Duke, UF, and UMICH-AA appear within my grasp?

You have a good shot at UNC-CH, University of Florida, and UMich-Ann Arbor. UCLA is difficult for out of staters but if you really want to go there, you should apply. Duke is a huge crapshoot for anybody and it is not realistic to expect to get in, especially since you claim to have few extracurriculars.

You could try NYU, USC, Texas, and Wisconsin. Transfer admissions is very strange and is a crapshoot at many of these schools even with your GPA, so the concept of safeties and reaches does not really exist, especially as an OOS to state schools and to prestigious schools like Duke.

Apply, still if you have the time. There is not much to lose and who knows, maybe you can get into Duke (don’t get too intimidated even though your chances are very low). Follow the advice of earlier posters and see where other students from your CC have got into.

LOL well, I was gonna list some SUNYs and Cornell, but I just saw your other post. So hmmm I would say UNC, UF, and UMich are good reaches! What about Emory or UMiami?
