What are some ways to improve on your writing?

What are some ways to improve on your writing? I know read more, but what kind of books to read? any suggestions?

moderators: sorry if this is the wrong forum!

Read more of whatever it is you plan to write. Writing academic papers? Try JSTOR. Writing fiction, ask your librarian for the genre you enjoy. Writing personal statement essays? Check out EB White, Joan Didion, ask the librarian for others.

The standard prescription is to read more, but frankly, I think the best advice is to write more–a lot more. Write just for the heck of it. Find someone who will give you some useful feedback.

Putting thoughts to paper helps you learn to think more clearly. Thinking clearly makes one a better writer.

Write. Get feedback. Write. Get feedback. Write. Get feedback. Then write some more, and get more feedback.

When you’ve grasped and internalized the basic mechanics of good writing, read everything you can get your hands on: novels, short stories, essays, high quality journalism, editorials, OpEd pieces, biographies, history, film and theater reviews, sports reporting, magazines of all kinds. Read not just for content but with an eye toward observing and analyzing the writer’s style, technique, and use of language. Read to build your own vocabulary. And all the while, keep writing and getting feedback, writing and getting feedback.

Writing is a craft. Like any craft, it takes hard work, attention to detail, repetition, and experience to master it. Some are more naturally gifted in ways that allow writing to come more easily to them. But no one is a naturally gifted writer. Even the most gifted need to develop their craft, and the only way to do that is to write.

Write a lot

Read a lot from good writers… That’s what I’ve lacked “Reading” is a skill as well

does anyone know any good writing/english online programs? or writing camps?

Force yourself to write - a lot. Get feedback. Force yourself to read - a lot. Make sure it’s quality stuff.

Read every book you can get your hands on.
After reading each book, write a passage in the author’s style.
You will develop an understanding of a variety of styles as you craft your own.
