What are stuff you should write about?

Academic Interest essays
consider the academic programs in the school/college you indicated above. how will you utilize them to further explore your intended major or field of interest?

any suggestions on what i should write?
is there any other essays other than the 2 academic interest essays + 1 common apps essay?

Take what you wrote about in your first essay and look through the courses Cornell offers. Pick out a few that relate to your interest(s) and write about how eager you are to take them. Be sincere...

And I don't believe there are any additional essays; I only had the two academic interest and one common app.

Man...I thought I was going to be unique because I used the course catalogue....guess not...

I picked the programs/opportunities that Cornell offered that you cant find at most universities. For me, i talked about mostly research and their co-op program, because it was the only school i was looking at that allowed me to do the co-op program and graduate in 4 years.

lol, I used it too, sorry towerpumpkin :-)

I used it as well... hey, it worked for a bunch of us!

Yeah, I didn't really think there was any other way to do it. Was there?

Topic was nearly the same as last year. Less specific though. It was more about how the college in general was going to help you explore your field. Opened it up for a nebulous response, which is my area of expertise. Anybody want me to post mine? I still have it on the computer. It doesn't directly correlate to this year's topic but it might give some ideas...

is it ok if we go over the word limit for the 2 essays?

Oh and btw on the subject of essays, do the optional essay! Fill up that optional page with a well-written essay about yourself. All the other topics are very specific, and might not give you a chance to tell them that you enjoy travel, fluffy dogs, and long walks on the beach or whatever. The optional essay is your chance to humanize yourself, to transform yourself from a candidate, represented by names and numbers, into a likeable person. Additionally, Cornell places a large weight on "interest," i.e. how badly you really really really want to come there, and this essay is one final way of showing them that you are willing to do what it takes to get into CU.

Don't go over the word limit.

must be engineering, i did diddlyswat for CAS, turned in app mid-January (2 weeks late), vague about interest (I knew nothing) and didn't do the optional. somehow still got accepted. i really really really got lucky.

Hah. I guess so. Then again, I mean people talk about the essays being important but honestly if you have really good grades and test scores, they are going to want you no matter what. Or you could just be lucky.

You can go over a little bit: no more than 50 on the 250 word essays and no more than 100 on the 500 word one.

perro - what optional essay? i don't see it in the package...

did anyone combine the 2 essays? i kno some ED people did...

Maybe they dont have it this year. I presumed they would bc they usually dont change stuff like that. Last year the very last page of the packet was an optional essay, "Briefly tell us anything more you would like us to know about yourself" or something to that extent. They could have gotten rid of it but i dunno why. Can some people who applied this year answer this question?

perro, i really wanna see your essay, post it up here or send to me plz.

Is it okay to combine two academic essays??

can I interept both questions as "why do i want do the engineering, why do i pursue the particular major/program, and why do I want to be in cornell"?? or does it have to be particualr course(such as coop..). i mean just looking through the catalogue and just pick some courses and ... so on seems to be unreal.

Perro please post your essay, I think it would really help everyone!

Thanks

Which essay, the academic one?

I'll post it, I'm telling you again it doesnt apply to this year's topic. Anyhow, here it is:

Topic: How will cornell help you to explore your chosen field? Or some such nonsense.

Essay: I believe that the College of Engineering at Cornell will be extremely beneficial to me in helping me to explore the field of engineering and pursue a career in this area. For many years, I have had a strong interest in engineering and have felt that it is ideally suited for me given my academic interests and personal traits. The College of Engineering will help me tremendously in exploring this branch of studies, and I believe that I will be able to utilize all that it offers. The introductory classes contained within this curriculum will increase my knowledge of mathematics and the physical sciences greatly beyond what I know today. The engineering and design courses will then incorporate all of the basic knowledge into a solid foundation in engineering. I have always enjoyed solving problems, coming up with creative ideas, and working in teams, concepts that are essential in this field. However, I have had little experience in combining these elements and utilizing them for practical applications. This College will give me opportunities far beyond what I have ever experienced to develop my ability to solve real-world engineering problems and to become proficient in the use of today’s latest engineering technology. I long have felt that the study of engineering is one well suited to me, and today I feel that Cornell’s College of Engineering is the best vehicle in helping me to explore and pursue this exciting field.

There you have it. Dunno how good it was. Good enough I guess. ;)
