Penn appears to have much more crime than other urban campuses, especially armed robberies. I know everyone says its safe so long as you use your common sense, but compared with say Columbia or Yale, Penn seems to have much more crime. DP seems to have articles about crime on a regular basis.

yeah crime crime...first thing one of my teahers said when i told him i'll be going to penn is: "don't go too far west, its sketchy"

However, everyone I've talked to said that the reputation Penn developed was because of its circumstance 20 years ago. Everyone who I've talked to who has been on the campus remotely recently has said it's not a problem.

But, ok, here, let me list all the bad things about Penn:

1)

One thing I don't like about Penn, and I know its somewhat racist, is the amount of Jews. Don't get me wrong - i have no problem with Jews. But 26%? That's a lot of Jews. I've only known probably 10-20 Jews in my life, but now I'll be going to school with 2,500 of them?

I'll adjust.

chocoman -- Are 2500 Jews somehow more overwhelming than 2500 Christians?

Well I've gone to school with Catholics my entire life. I don't know any Jews my age. Homogeneity is a problem with catholic schools.

I am not a fan of the sorority scene there. My best friend left Bryn Mawr with me and transferred to Penn. She was really, really turned off by that aspect of campus life. Two of my good friends at Harvard were transfers from Penn who'd been in sororities and had a very jaundiced/cynical view about them after quitting.

chocoman -- They're just people. Honest.

edit: For the record, I'm atheist.

chocoman, just wondering, where'd you get that statistic?

I forget. It might not be 26 percent exactly, but its in that area. I remember seeing something about at Penn you can't give exams on jewish holidays.

I'm certain I won't have a problem with them though, I shouldn't even be calling them "them"..... how about, I'm certain I won't have a problem with any of my fellow quakers. there we go.

According to Hillel, % of jewish population at Penn is 31%.

To follow up on my earlier post about crime, there is another story on DP today about another robbery. In fact, if you do search on DP with "robbery" you get 35 sotries for most recent one year period. Penn's gotta do someting about crime.

Everything else about Penn and Philly are great.

Professors are far too easy to meet and talk with. This results in too much enthusiasm which leads to unnecessary extra study.

Women are much too attractive, distracting from study during final weeks of Spring semester.

Presence of large numbers of foreign students provides too much perspective in classes like history and sociology.

Graduate TAs all appear to speak excellent English, resulting in need to stay awake in recitation.

Major sports teams win too many championships.

Small size of campus means you keep meeting new people.

High density of leading edge research provides too many opportunities for undergrads to gain experience and publication credits.

Location in big city provides too many off campus opportunities.

Yeah...there's a million things I don't like about Penn.

Nicely done, WilliamC :)

Hazmat, when you say, "It is NOT HYP," could you elaborate on what you mean by that? Are you referring to prestige alone, or the quality of the institution? If it's the latter, I'd love to hear more of your thoughts...

Thanks :)

31%? That is an obviously disproportionate amount of jews (when compared to the national demographics)... does anyone know why this might be?

Unlike a few in this thread though, I hardly see the jew-count as a negative attribute of Penn!

Well done, WilliamC -- I agree 100% -- so many things not to like about Penn! :)

No, it sure isn't -- it's unique!
