What are the bad things about UPenn?

Chocoman, your comment was not somewhat racist, it was outwardly and obscenely racist. I take offense to your prejudice, despite its roots in mere naivety and inexperience.

Raven, in all honesty, the disproportionate number of Jews at Penn, and at the rest of the Ivies -- and throughout the top schools in the country for that matter -- is a function of widespread Jewish intelligence and diligence in fields of academia. That may be a stereotype, and Chocoman will probably berate me for chiding words of his bias, while I comfortably use my own to put Jews in a positive light, but it is a general truth.

31% seems fairly accurate for the number of jewish students at penn. there really are a lot. chocoman, i went to catholic school all my life. for the first time, i am being challenged about my faith and am having to stand up for it. honestly, it's a great way to build character and strengthen your faith. also, there are so many great christian organizations at penn as well as jewish. i'm involved with the newman center, the catholic student center. it takes some adjusting but religious life at penn is great.

okay so i posted before reading redbarn's comments. chocoman, if u come to penn, you will get this response a lot unfortunately. redbarn, he was only asking about the number of jewish students. i had the same concerns entering penn. why do you feel the need to comment about jews' "higher levels of intelligence and diligence" !?!?! unnecessary, and more racist and biased than any of chocoman's comments.

just to give everyone here a realistic perspective on what is bad at penn.
The negatives about penn:

people can be really arrogant and JAPpy.

the school is rather cliqish.

there isn't too much of an intellectual atmosphere. Once you get here you'll find out that not everyone is ultra smart. A lot of times you'll wonder how people got in.

frat/sororities parties are really bad. You need to go off campus for a good social scene.

On-housing and housing services are terrible. Get off campus as quickly as you can.
-The food tastes like ass.

that's pretty much it.

there is an anti-intellectual atmosphere on campus

What is so bad about the frat/sororities and their parties?

What's so bad about the anti-intellectual atmosphere? I just want to go and graduate so i can get my 6 digit salary and go party:)

anti-intellectual, huh... o.0...

also, yeah. there is definitely a disproportionate # of jews at all of the top schools. and asians. asians represent 4% of the population and take up 20+% at penn

but really, they're just people, lol... those two groups generally have it in their cultures to work harder academically and such, hence the %s

last I read, 60% of the whites are jewish, so with 38 percent minority, its aprox 36% jewish. (which is slightly less than the percentage at my public high school, lol)

A friend of mine says shes in a catholic group where they go to church every week and whatnot. Shes says everyones really cool and fun. I may join that.

Do most students move off campus after sophomore year? (or earlier or later?) Is there a lot of 'community' or school spirit (aside from simply sports)? For students who don't want to get involved with Greek life, what are the other social opportunities?

chocoman, you're a bigoted twat

Penn is a great school

bern:

I got a kick from your list of negatives! With the exception of the frat/sorority comment & of course the housing -- I can pretty much say the same things about my HS (where I've had a great 4 yrs!!)

Doesn't sound all that bad (to me anyway) -- but all kidding aside, are you happy at Penn?

How is saying that there's a lot of Jews at a school bigoted? The fact remains - there is. I didn't say I hated Jews. If I hated Jews I wouldn't be attending next year.

Adam K: go to cc and read chocomans comment
TheStonedPandas: holy ****

i'm sure your comment was made out of naivety, but watch yoself foo

saying that you don't like the fact that there are so many jews is bigoted. You basically said you wish there were less jews at penn, and the only reason to say something like that was if you did not like jews.

Chocoman's not an anti-semite (although the comment was anti-semitic), because he obviously wouldn't have posted that if he realized how offensive it was. He's just a naive idiot. There'd be no problem asking why theres a lot of Jews at penn as a question but that's not what you were asking. No, you were responding to a post entitled "What are the bad things about UPenn?" Can you guys seriously not see why this would be offensive to a religion who lost a third of its members a mere 60 years, because people just didn't like them? I'm not calling anyone a nazi...just making a point. Jews are overrepresented at elite institutions in general for a number reasons, one being that they do disproportionately well on standardized tests. It's not really a difficult concept to grasp. You'll also find in the real word with professions such as law, investment banking, and medicine Jews are over-represented. Like Asians, Jews are a group of people characterized by diligence and a drive to succeed...Chocoman's comment was ignorant and sickening.

owned .

Id love to argue, but I'm about to be late for my Klan rally.

College is supposed to prepare you for the real world. The real world is not 31% Jewish. It's 2.5 times 10 to the negative six power Jewish.

Coming from a background where pretty much everyone I know is Catholic, going to a school where Catholics are largely underrepresented and Jews are overrly represented is a big change. Look at a post above - I'm not the only one. That is a bad thing for me. So I brought it up. I understand that your faith has been persecuted for so many years, but I thought we were at a point where something like this could be discussed without having to resort to name calling. I hope I'm still right.
