I’m currently a junior and I’m looking to prep for the act in April. I took a Kaplan practice test yesterday and I scored a 28. My sub scores were:
English-23
Math-29
Reading-22
Science-36
I am looking to end with a composite score of 34. I’m starting to study with the Princeton review act book, but i am also looking personal tutoring courses. I have looked into Kaplan, Princeton review, Huntington, and Sylvan. I’m not sure if it would be better to get one on one prep of just take a generalized act prep class with other students. What has worked for you guys?
I took the ACT 3 times, and my score went from 29 to 34 (similar to your situation). After my first test (which I unfortunately did not study for), I went through months of tutoring with C2 (mostly Math and Science) and used a lot of prep books.
For me, the tutoring service was useful for helping me raise my score in one subject since they usually concentrate on what you are struggling most in, which meant that my other subjects pretty much stayed the same the second time I took it.
I think what worked most for me on my third test was just plain practice. I highly recommend the “5lb Book of ACT Practice Problems”.
Also, if you struggled in English like I did, “The Complete Guide to ACT English” by Meltzer raised my score from 30 to a 36.
“The Official ACT Prep Guide” is always a good book to have as well if you are looking for updated strategies and types of questions from the creators of ACT. However, I felt like they had more explanations than actual practice tests.
Another thing I would do is utilize the resources online. If you just search up full ACT Exams you will find plenty of free packets to print out from past exams.
Good luck!
This was helpful, thank you chubbypanda
How much was the tutoring at c2?
My daughter’s ACT woke up 6 points with private tutoring. It was worth the cost.
I think it was $135/hour and she did 2-3 hours per week for the summer before senior year.
@jason2929 I don’t quite remember but I believe it was around 60 bucks per session (2 hours). I may be completely wrong so you can also check by contacting (:
