sorry if this question has been repeated a lot

Well, it depends on what area of communications. I can help you with journalism. Northwestern's Medill, GW's SMPA, UNC, and Missouri are the best for undergrad. For grad school, you want Columbia.
Many schools offer communication majors, but there is always one area of emphasis over others. You will need to check into that to see if it is in line with your interests. For example, Furman has one of the nation's experts in political communications- along with the Riley Institute. Vandy has a strong speech/comm program as do some other LACs. But check into the school, and see what courses are available. Also, BU has a great program for undergrads!

here are some schools with relatively large communications/journalism programs

while it's true that smaller programs that are good specialize in one or two areas such as political communication others are truly comprehensive with strong programs across the board. missouri, syracuse, texas, and USC are such programs wherein you might migrate, say, from photojournalism to advertising or public relations and not lose much.

Sorry but need to ask again...What about the radio tv film major which universities are good(I'VE BEEN ASKING THIS FOREVER BUT NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW)

Most people don't realize it...but Florida State University has a good Comm program -- it's pretty selective program -- only about 50% of FSU students who think their comm majors their fist two years get in..

Bowling Green's good for rhetoric.

okay pateta, here are some good ones: miami, missouri, northwestern, emerson, boston u., southern cal, florida.

what about marketing/ communications?

i'd place northwestern at the top as this began with don schultz there.
other strong ones are texas, syracuse, and michigan state.

UT-Austin is very strong

UMiami, FSU, Northwestern

pateta: Wesleyan, Vassar, Columbia all have strong film studies majors, if that's the kind of thing you're looking for.

while pateta's question is more than two years old there should be a point of clarification for readers. there is a distinct difference between cinema programs which focus upon issues such as genre and criticism and so called broadcast programs that focus more on television news. some programs blend the two but many others don't. in fact, the former often rest within a liberal arts college while the latter are found more often in colleges of communication and journalism.

Getting a masters in Comm right now from Johns Hopkins...small program and very intense but JHU doesn't have an undergraduate program for Comm. I want to apply for a PHD, so I am more interested in going into academia and research (so if you want professional knowledge maybe my list is not great) but from what I hear the big wigs in comm are:

1.) UPenn. This is absolutely the best comm program in the U.S. Extremely competitive and always ranked #1 for PHD programs.
2.) USC. Also very competitive and quite prestigious.
3.) Stanford
4.) Columbia. Probably up there with the rest or perhaps just after UPenn. Can't go wrong here (however I don't think they have a comm. major, just journalism for undergrads. Might be wrong)
5.) Texas
6.) Cornell
7.) Wisconsin
8.) Maryland
9.) UCSD
10.) NYU
-also, UNC-chapel hill, drawing a blank on other places but they are definitely out there. O yeah Northwestern should be near at the top of that list.

FYI, for undergrad, comm. academics and professionals don't usually major in communications. I would recommend just majoring in history or something you like and plan on getting a masters later in life. That's just my opinion...

This is a year out of date but here are some numbers from the SC Annenberg School of Communications from the website: (There were more applicants for the 2008 incoming class).
Applicants for fall 2007: 1876
Enrolled freshmen: 157
G.P.A.,weighted: 4.10

hoo, your discussion about doctoral programs in communications really doesn't fit into this thread, but since i hold one from a widely recognized elite program that you fail to list on your top ten some clarification is in order.

there is a very wide swath when using the word "communications." on one end are very practically oriented programs focusing on things like advertising and journalism. on the other end there are programs with a focus on rhetoric and oration. and many in between. never have i seen UCSD on anybody's list in any of these, though each of the others have some documented strengths. further, you are incorrect about columbia's program. you might want to check your facts next time.

a similar observation might be made at both undergraduate and master's levels, though there are a number of comprehensive colleges of communications around the nation such as texas, both annenbergs, michigan state, and illinois.

drj-sorry I didn't list your school. I was just writing down schools off of the top of my head. I consider UCSD to be strong in communication. I am searching online for a comm. undergraduate major for columbia...not sure if it exists. That's why I said that I wasn't sure. So I think it's unwarranted to criticize me for not checking my facts. I simply was trying to give advice off the top of my head.

Is that the latest ranking? What year was that published?
