What are the best colleges that will accept me?

I want to know which colleges I should aim for and which one of these top colleges would accept me. Keep in mind that I do not want a large, populated university. I am considering going into pre-medicine. I have considered that for many years now, but my course could always change because I have not stepped a foot into college yet. I am currently a Junior in high school.

ACT score: 31
GPA: 4.1 and 4.0 unweighted

AP Courses:
Currently enrolled in: AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, and AP Psychology
Next year: AP Literature, AP Statistics, AP Calculus BC, and PSEO Chemistry (pseo = taken at a university)
I may also do another AP English course as an independent study

This summer I am going to do a summer science program at a fairly prestigious college for 3 weeks.

I am employed as a ballet instructor at a studio.

I also am a member of NHS and student council. For NHS, it is part of the program that I volunteer for a certain amount of hours.

My first two years of highschool, I attended a different school and participated in a varsity sport. When I moved to a smaller school, we did not have sports offered at my school for this year. However, there will be a cross country team that I will join next year.

I am the top of my class.

I may get some good teacher recommendations.

And I took 2 practice AP tests so far and I got a 5 in AP Calc and a 5 in AP Psych.

I am from a rural area, but I am caucasian and female. So, I have a little bit of diversity because of the area that I am from.

what state?

You have a good shot at basically any state school (Except UC-B and UVA if you’re in-state), and any private university ranked <25.

Borb- I really don’t want to go to a state school. Private universities interests me more. What do you mean ranked <25? Do you mean the top 25 private universities?

Poseidenj- I don’t really mind which state I go to. I live in Minnesota, and there are several top schools here. Otherwise, the east coast interests me. My father won’t let me go to the west coast because he believes that there will be an earthquake that will take a chunk of California into the ocean (great huh? haha).

your dad is awesome :D

He means you have a good shot at any university not ranked in the top 25.

Why can’t I have a shot at the top 25 universities?

Nobody said that you don’t have a shot at the top 25. They said that you don’t have a good shot. Admissions to the very top colleges are mostly random once your scores are in their radar. You will have a shot, but the chance of being accepted are only high if your a superb athlete, your family donates a lot to the college, and things like that.

No one really has a good shot at the top 25. Additionally, your ACT scores are a little low and you don’t have that many ECs. Just my opinion though. Best of luck.

I’d be surprised if you didn’t get into a good school.

Given your ECs, grades, and test scores, you have a good chance at some selective schools. However, your chance of making it into any given school of the highest selective (HYPS) is very slim unless you get the ACT score up and participate in some outstanding ECs.

I was on the Varsity Dance Team which practice 3-5 hours a day 5-6 times a week at my old school. I am joining the Cross Country team which will practice 2 hours everyday for most of the week. I am in NHS and student council. I volunteer quite often. I will be participating in a college summer program, and I was a counselor at a church camp. Also, I do dance at a studio on the side AND teach there. You all are saying that I don’t have enough ECs? Do I need a time machine?

I really don’t want to take the ACT again, and I don’t think it’ll improve a whole lot. I took it once before without prep, and this is the score I got with prep. Most of the time, when I see the schools that people say are the most selective, I see that the average ACT is around 29 or 30. For example, for Brown, I saw the median (25th to 75th percentil) range from 27-33. A lot of times I see that the average ACT score for Dartmouth is 29.

EDIT: Oh, and I made it to state twice on the Varsity Dance Team

‘No one really has a good shot at the top 25.’

Thats is so not true, no average people have a good shot at them, but I know tons of people who were without a doubt shoe in’s at many of those schools… like one friend got into MIT, Duke, Cornell, and a few more of the top 10s… he didnt even apply to schools between 10-25… i mean there are lots of people who are definitely in at many of them… for example, id say almost 95% of HYPS people will be guaranteed to get into AT LEAST 10-15 more of the top 25…

I know what you mean, only i hear that phrase thrown around on here so much that its just annoying :P

I didn’t say you didn’t have enough ECs. I meant to indicate that the quality of your ECs is subpar for the most selective colleges. I stand by this from what you’ve provided.

I’m not trying to fault you, but it’s a general reality that the most selective schools’ acceptees have stellar extracurriculars.

Good luck; I’m sure you’re be accepted into a very good school.

Would it make a difference that I go to a charter school in a rural area in the midwest? It’s a top charter school nationwide and very small. Would that create diversity that would interest colleges?

Oh, and I agree ns89. I know that someone got into an Ivy with a 23 ACT.

To have a good chance at a top 25 school you need to get your act score up

Maybe Tulane? You would probably get in, and I think that they have a good pre-med program. It’s about medium sized too, so it fits your description. Good luck!

With that high of a GPA and your involvement with outside activities, you probably have a shot at some of the top 25 schools. Have you taken the SATs though? Because if you take those and you have the ACT it might improve your chances even more  Also a lot can ride on one’s essay for a given university. If you’re a good writer than you should pretty much be able to crack into a few of the top universities :)

Wow, this thread is so old but I just had to comment. Who are you people dishing out this advice? It’s absolutely misguided and I suspect you are all either very young or very misinformed. This student has a shot to get into any university she chooses with those grades, EC’s, and test scores. Get your ACT score up? A 31 ACT score is right in the middle 50% range for ALL top selective schools, including Duke, Harvard, Cornell, and Stanford. Ineedadvice, if you happen to stumble across this thread please post and let us know where you wound up attending, I’d be astonished if you didn’t get selected at a really great private university.

Um I got into 5 out of the 7 schools in the Top 17 i applied to, including 1 in the top 10, with a 30 on the ACT and a 3.7 UW GPA. With her stats it looks like she has a serious shot at any school. Once you hit the top 25 it really becomes more dependent on essays, recs, interviews, other intangibles, and the disposition of the admissions officer on the given day.

Good luck. Don’t let anyone on CC short sell you.

Haha. Ditto to #18 comment.
