My junior son and I have just finished a week of college visits, which brings out total to 10. We've seen everything from small LACs (Centre, Ursinus, Eckerd) to small private universities (Rice, WUSTL, Emory) to large public universities (Texas, Georgia, Alabama). For many reasons, he's leaning toward an honors program at a public research university. My question is which state universities have the best honors programs. We've been very impressed by what we've seen at the three we've visited, but I'm wondering if there are other states with particularly good ones. Does anyone know of a source ranking these?

Michigan State is good. Texas. UGA.

I've been impressed with Michigan State and Alabama. Penn State and Texas have strong reputations.

Texas has several very strong honors programs, including their famed Plan II...now if only I could have gotten ANY of my three kids to even LOOK at it...

yep Texas has really high ranked honor programs. Plan II, honors business, engineering. cant go wrong with ut

UGA has one of the best Honors Colleges in the country...but good luck getting in!

IMO, Texas has one of the best.

UT's Plan II is one of the oldest and most respected. It has been the national model for most of the contemporary programs at other universities. It's the best of all worlds - UT's unparalleled resources and star faculty coupled with peers and class sizes similar to the most selective privates.

Penn State, U of Washington, UMichigan, Wisc, UIllinois UC, and UNC all have very good honors programs.

I have to second UGA's Honors College. One of the best, if not the best, in the US. Haha, true it's really hard to get in. I know several people who got into Ivy League schools - or Ivy League league schools - and got waitlisted or flat out rejected from Moore (Honors College).

UVA's Echols scholar and Jefferson scholar programs are great (especially jefferson scholars, as they get free tuition)

I've heard good things about UConn's honors program. Also Penn State (Schreyer - only 300 per year) and University of Florida. Very high stats
are required for the latter two, not sure about UConn's.

I think U Pitt has a great honors program.

^^^ i agree

Uga, Uva, Unc
