What are the best SAT Books?? I know this question has been asked again, and again and again b.
Here are a few titles/companies

CollegeBoard's
Kaplan
Barron's
Grubler's
Princeton Review
The Rocket Review

I purchased the CollegeBoard's and Barron's. I don't really like Barron's since it is very little like the real one. I'm thinking of Grubler's and The Rocket Reivew.

Any ideas?? Comments??

-Ray

For math I know that Gruber's is one of the best. For CR I've heard that Grammatix really helps but I don't have it. As for writing, I've heard that Grammatix and RocketReview are both good but I found that other companies such as Kaplan and Princeton are also good for the multiple choice section because they both identify the most common errors.

I can only comment on a few of the books you listed, but here are my opinions.
CollegeBoard's: Undeniably THE BEST book out there!
Gruber's: I have heard that this book is great for math, fair for writing, and absolutely worthless for CR
Princeton Review: I liked it for the SAT, but people here seem to find it less than accurate.
The Rocket Review: Ive heard that its good for the grammar part of the writing section.

Gruber's (not Grubler's) is good for math, grammar, and vocab. PR's 11 SAT's is horrible.

When you buy your books, make sure you're getting the most recent versions. Collegeboard released the details of the new SAT in the fall of 2004. Kaplan published books in the early summer. They didn't know how many questions would be on the test or what the changes would be like EXACTLY. They just guessed.

I bet that is what Barron's did as well.

I like the layouts of Gruber's (for math only), Barron's, and The Princeton Rev's books. I'm not a fan of Kaplan books, as they are filled with typos and whatnot (check out the 2400 book - - pathetic).

Are a lot of people using the CollegeBoard's books? The only one I'm familliar with is "The Official SAT Study Guide." Is this a good buy?

What are your preferences when it comes to the CR section?

So is Gruber's the best for math? What about RocketReview?

When it comes to SAT prep, most would agree that there is no better buy than The Official SAT Study Guide. The only other book that I am aware of that is available from Collegeboard is the so-called Red Book aka the third edition of 10 Real SATs. Although I have not personally used it, I have heard that it can be quite useful for additional review, as most of the content on the new CR and math sections is comparable to what was on the old SAT.

I got 700-750 on the V sections in 10 Reals, but I consistently score 600-650 on new SAT practice tests and on the PSAT.

Dont ever get kaplan. Don't get anything by kaplan.

Does everybody think that Barron's SAT Math Workbook is useless?

Also, how useful is Gruber's 3400 word list? Would it be worth it to learn it rather than using PR's Word Smart?

Considering how vocab is only used in sentence completions now, I really don't think 3400 is necessary unless you can easily do it without taking time away from practice and studying for the other sections.

If you can do it easily, go ahead. If not, it really is enough. Notice how the next comprehensive word list is Sparknotes (1000), Barron's (800), and then Kaplan/Word Smart (600). 3400 is a huge jump.

Isn't there more than one version of PR Word Smart? If so, which one is best? (the newest one?)

I'm wondering about the RocketReview as well. Is it any good??

_Ray

although i've heard their SAT book sucks, barron's math workbook is awesome
eventhough some sections are pointless and will never appear on the sat, it provides the best practice problems for the sat and will boost your score

Princeton Review's red/white New SAT book thing helped me a lot.

killaerone, WordSmart and WordSmart II contain different sets of words. Word smart II is more advanced, so I assume fewer of the words will actually be on the SAT. But you should get the newest version of WordSmart 1 (3rd Edition I think).

Seeing as other people seem to praise Rocket Review, let me be the first to advise against it. Most of the book is repetitive through the sections. The Writing and Math Reviews are really vague. As for the drills he provides, the answers are often not the fastest ways to solve the problem's, and they aren't explained step by step. I would say go with Grammatix or Gruber's before Rocket Review. I would even buy Barron's before RR. The book seemed to be a hodgepodge of Adam talking about why you need to change your thinking for the SAT as well as providing few problems to actually practice on. Save the money.
