Can you rank them from top to bottom?

Also, throw in Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in there too (since i might apply there).

The rest I can’t rank meaningfully.

Berkeley, definitely. Very selective though! Just get a 3.8+ (transfer GPA) and you’ll be competitive.

From there on, UC San Diego and UCLA are really good. (Sidenote: University of Michigan is more acclaimed than UC San Diego and UCLA in Computer Science. Another public university to think about).

After those universities, you can’t go wrong with the rest.

@heatz, where would you place cal poly SLO in that list?

@derse4444, yah, i already knew those too but thanks

@ocnative, I’m only applying to in-state public schools. Also, UCLA and CAL are out of reach for me. I’m specifically trying to figure out if Cal Poly SLO is better for Computer Science or if Davis is.

Like, I know Davis is probably the lowest ranked UC for Computer Science (not including UC Merced or Riverside), but is it still better than Cal Poly SLO for computer science?

@bhav007 - I hear both schools are equally good. But - I think UC Davis might have more to offer.

Most people would place UCD above UCSC. “Worst” is a funny term here as, per the link posted at the beginning of the thread, what separates the mid-tier UCs is 0.1-0.2 points; in essence, it’s like saying X is the WORST of the Ivies – it’s still an Ivy.

As someone had previously noted on this subforum, employers aren’t going to have US News open while they’re going through your resume.

The main differences between UCD and Cal Poly are the price of the education, the approach to teaching, and post graduation earnings. Both schools are good, and very similar in terms of their characters (both have big agriculture schools, both have similar admission requirements, both are residential campus located in semi-rural parts of CA as college towns).

Cal Poly is cheaper, focused upon “learn by doing” approach to education, and its graduates’ have higher average earnings than all of UCs except Cal.

“Cal Poly is cheaper, focused upon “learn by doing” approach to education, and its graduates’ have higher average earnings than all of UCs except Cal.”

@blindmonkey - Unless you have statistics to prove that claim, it’s not a valuable statement on helping @bhav007

you want stats on which? The cheaper part? CSU is cheaper than UC, pretty common knowledge.

Hope that helps to dispel your hunger for data.

As for “learn by doing”, that’s Cal Poly’s motto. It’s on their web page.

www.calpoly.edu

Cal Poly is heavy with engineering majors, so using average pay levels for the entire school’s graduates skews upward due to the relatively large number of engineering majors.

Cal Poly’s own career survey is here: [Graduate Status Report - Career Services - Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo](http://www.careerservices.calpoly.edu/content/student/gsr_report)

Thanks for the responses guys. I’m still trying to find info on Davis CS vs Cal Poly SLO CS.

@ucbalumnus

I see your point, but I can’t completely agree with you that % of engineering student population is the primary driver for earnings average for an university.

UCSD has the largest engineering school within the UC system, and it could not beat Cal in earnings. In fact, Cal Poly out earns UCSD, even though UCSD is often viewed as better than SLO.

Cal Poly Pomona has one of the largest engineering school (by % of students and actual count) in CSU and yet it couldn’t out earn many of the smaller universities with smaller (by % and actual count) engineering schools.

Many liberal arts college (e.g. college William and Mary) routinely out earn STEM schools.
