I have the same question!! From what I have read I’ve found that Georgetown, George Washington, Yale, Brown, NYU, And American are all
repeatedly said to be good. I’m not sure on exactly which are the best though.

Does nobody know? :(

Georgetown. After that, American and George Washington are strong options. The University of Denver is said to be pretty good( Condoleezza Rice is a graduate). I believe Seton Hall in NJ has a few unique programs with the U.N through its Whitehead school of diplomacy- it’s a comparably easier school to get into compared to many of the above mentioned colleges. You might want to consider what field of IR your interests are concentrated in; many schools are strong in particular regions, such as Asia or Latin America, while others are more focused on development and Global Relations.

I’d pick a school close to DC, Maryland/VA area.

GWU, Georgetown and American are probably the best picks, but I’d also look at George Mason, University of Maryland and University of Virginia too.

They are good schools that will allow you to live close to where all the political/government action takes place. Which makes it alot easier for scholarships, EC’s and volunteerism.

Anyone else have any ideas. The criteria you posted is great by the way :)

Bump…

I’m pretty sure that Tufts is one of the most popular one. I could be confusing it with another school, but look into it.

I don’t know whether you know it but there’s a ranking of IR programs by Foreign Policy called Inside the Ivory Tower.

Here’s the Wikipedia link:[Inside the Ivory Tower - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Inside the Ivory Tower - Wikipedia)

Johns Hopkins is known to be one of the best in the country at IR…it is always one of the more popular majors

Check out US military academies. That’s how you become part of the club.

SFS Georgetown!

William & Mary also has a good IR dept, though nowhere near the depth of Georgetown.

Madeline Albright says W&M may be the best in the country.

if you go to insidecollege.com they have a list of the best colleges for internation relation programs

(for the original question in the thread)

it depends on whether you want to do international relations/affairs/studies on an academic level (such as to study culture, write, teach) or if you want to pursue a career in a more political environment (Sec. of State would be the most obvious position/ diplomacy) schools like Georgetown, GW, and American are going to have amazing internship opportunities with the government because they are in DC, but ive heard that schools like UChicago have programs that are better suited for an academic interest.

btw, Tufts is traditionally very good for IR, but doesnt have as good of a reputation in other areas (still a good school, with no offense to any Tufts alums), which, when you are an undergraduate, may not be the best choice because you may not get a good all-around education (such as in your core curriculum). for a graduate degree, however, its very good.

Bump…

^^ I think the answer has been adequately provided.

From what I’ve heard and seen, Georgeotwn, William and Mary, and Columbia have good IR programs. I’ve sat in on an IR class at William and Mary and it was really great(they were discussing apartheid and had a guest speaker). I’m applying to all three of those schools for IR but all of the schools that the others have said are sure to be great too. =)
