What are the best ways to learn French?

i've had 4 years of high school french, but my teacher was terrible. i love the language though, so i want to relearn it over the summer by myself.

my pronunciation is good. i'm learning vocab by reading le monde (my reading comprehension is alright for the most part). i can easily relearn all the grammatical rules, but i'm worried that if i always view french grammar as a set of rules, it'll never come naturally to me. i also have a very hard time with listening comprehension (i mean actual-speed french, not slow, enunciated french), and it takes me a while to form sentences because i still think in english.

so how do i eliminate my dependency on english when i learn french and start thinking in french? like i said, i read le monde. i also watch some french news and game shows and listen to french music, and i think my listening comprehension is gradually getting better. what are the best books for grammar? should i get a tutor?

Do you have the opportunity to take the next level of class at a nearby CC or university? College level classes are typically much faster paced and more in depth; you will learn a lot more than a HS class in a faster amount of time.

The best way to advance with your skills at this point is to actually go to a French speaking country, either to travel, or to take a language immersion program. I know there are plenty of these programs in Spanish speaking countries and I think I heard about one or more in Montreal if that is an option.

hmm i might travel to montreal this summer. thank you!
