I am OOS in IB program. My stats: SAT 2310; SAT II : 700 Bio, will be taking Math II and US History; Took two AP and got 4 and 5 (History and Human Geo);
EC: Marching Band (First Chair Region Orchestra, and several awards); JV Tennis for two years; Lot of volunteer hours (500 +) - Teaching Inner city kids through a nationally recognized program); CAS hours; Made into prestigious Youth Orchestra (2 years); Piano (learning since 2003 and have several awards); NHS; NMF (have enough PSAT to make it).
I am seriously considering UNC - Chapel Hill (possibly Morehead-Cain).

Not even a ‘Hi’ or a ‘please’?

My bad…Can some one please evaluate my chances? Thanks

If your an even relatively competitive applicant for the Morehead-Cain than your most likely going to get in. The Morehead-Cain is incredibly difficult to get, and from my experience this past year with students from my school, the student that got the farthest (was a finalist), was an extremely good writer and was very well versed about literature, social issues, and the world in general. Aside from that, you look to be a fairly competitive applicant, but nothing is guaranteed. I was instate UNC, and OOS UVA and got into both. I wasn’t surprised about UNC, but I was with UVA. I barely got over 2000 on my SAT and was admitted (not waitlisted) to UVA and only had general accolades concerning varsity sports and general community service, while people with almost perfect SATs were denied. Its all just one big guessing game. Good luck :)

I would think you would get in, but the Morehead thing might be a bit much.

Your scores are fine, but you’ll need to take more than two AP’s next year, especially if you want a chance at even being nominated as a Morehead candidate; it’s incredibly competitive. Essays are also very important in the UNC app, so focus on those over the summer.

The reason for lack of AP - I am in IB program.

I say likely in, but nothing is ever certain for anyone with OSS.

As for the Morehead, as with most competitive scholarships, the process is so random there really isn’t a way for people to tell you your chances. Morehead scholars are some of the brightest students in the country, and while grades and ECs may get you the nomination, and up to semi-finalist status, in the end, it is personality that countsand the interview. Definitely seek your schools nomination, but don’t go into the process expecting to be awarded it.

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate it very much.

Is your school a Morehead-Cain nominating school? If not, your only shot is being nominated through the admissions office and those are long odds, not impossible but not an easy path.
