I have a friend who came to US and spent his senior junior and senior year in Michigan, he applied to CoE *regular decision. He wants to know what are the chances for him to get in since he got 5 on AP calc test and 4 on AP physic test and 26 on ACT.

PS, Is that in-state is the group that has the most opportunities? than OOS than international??

Colleges dont consider AP scores that much in the decision process…i didnt send any of my 5 AP scores and I still got in.

Basically, Instate applicants have a high chance in getting in with lower stats than compared to OOS and International. Ultimately, international ranks as the hardest to get in.

Your friend’s AP scores don’t really mean much, the number of AP classes and overall GPA does matter.

ACT of a 26 is very low and will hurt him. A lot of people from other countries are now starting to apply to UM, and frankly competition is strong and there a ton of great applicants overseas that UM can choose. From what i saw with some of my friends in China, they usually score near perfect scores on standardized tests. Also for international applicants, most of their families are generally well off financially and over prep their children for the ACT and SAT.

In addition, UM’s average ACT score for admission to CoE is around 30 and above with a generally high math subscore.

Chances aren’t great, but BEST OF LUCK to your friend!

yes, me and my friend were both from China, the reason most Chinese kids do so well on ACT and SAT is that they take these prep class everyday before they leave China. My friend he has a 3.75 GPA and 5AP classes. So you mean the chances for him to get in is really low?

Summer programs and ECs are icing on the cake. GPA and Test scores are the fundamentals of your application. While it true that amazing ECs (started business, patented invention, etc) will allow admissions officers to overlook low test score, a summer engineering program that almost anyone can attend probably won’t cut it.

That’s not to say that he shouldn’t apply; he does have a chance. Just understand that UM is a reach school. Don’t expect an admission letter with any degree of certainty.
