Byung,
Is that 2.88 your UC GPA? If it is, to be honest you have a very slim chance of getting into one of the UC's this year.

If you don't know what the UC GPA is, then you need to go to www.ucop.edu/pathways and carefully look at the information there. Have you taken all of the required a-g requirements? If your GPA goes up when you recompute it, you have a better chance. If it goes down, you're going to have problems as the minimum GPA for UC admissions is 2.8.

I do think you'd have a good shot at many of the cal states, however.

My suggestion: talk this over with a guidance counselor at your school to see whether you should realistically be aiming at the UC's for freshman admission or would do better to either go for the cal states or go to Community college and then try to transfer to a UC in two years. Good luck!

thanks for the cold reality carolyn i appreciate it. better than giving myself false hope. but i was also wondering...is it possible to transfer from a calstate to a uc? i heard it was much more difficult or nearly impossible w/o a lot more hassle compared with going through the junior college route for two years then to ucs etc.

It is difficult to transfer from the cal state system to the UC system. Not that it can't be done, but it is far easier to transfer from a community college to the UC's.

Don't worry - many of the cal states are very good schools. They focus on undergrad education which is great. Some have really unique programs that you just aren't going to find at the UC's. I really think many of the cal states have been overlooked in the shadow of the UC's but I expect that's going to change.

A few of the cal states that have impressed me: Monterey Bay - has a really unique approach to education with some great career-focused majors. Humboldt state - beautiful northern Cali. location, small school feel, good academics, very liberal student body. Sonoma State - another cal state that feels like a small school. But there are so many cal states to choose from, I'm sure you'll find something that YOU like too. And, you'll be paying far less than a UC.

And, don't rule out private schools either. Just a thought.
