My question is: What are my chances to get into these schools being that I am an extremely talented oboe player who is also hispanic, keeping my stats in mind? Please respond...

Ivies are reach, carnegie and john and north is match, rest are about safeties.

what else can i do to get into ivies?

anyone else have comments???? please!

Northeastern is a safety?

Anyways, you could raise you SAT I by like 150+ points for the Ivies.

If you can't, i just guess you'd have to do a killer essay with good recs.

IN = almost 100%
GREAT CHANCES = 80-85%
VERY GOOD CHANCES: 70-75%
GOOD CHANCES: 50+%

Boston College - GREAT
Boston University - IN
Carnegie Mellon University - VERY GOOD
Cornell University - VERY GOOD
Harvard College - GOOD
Ithaca College - IN
Johns Hopkins University - VERY GOOD
Northeastern University - IN
New York University - GREAT
Princeton University - GOOD
Yale University - GOOD

If you raise that SAT score to 1450+ these reaches will become matches.

Prospy, what are those, 1965 chances?

Probably insanely good. Way better than my chances, even though I have a 1600 and a 4.0 average with 12 AP classes and already 6 5's on APs. Hispanic Oboe players are no doubt in extremely high demand.

really? you think so? anyone else comment please? im worried that i wont get in anywhere good. Basically, I applied to 7 schools and my oboe applied to the 4 Ivies, if that makes sense. I'm just hoping that they need an oboe player who is decent.

Yes I really think so. And you seem nice, but frankly I resent it.

IN = almost 100%
GREAT CHANCES = 80-85%
GOOD CHANCES: ~50%
goo: 40-50%
go: 25%-50%
g: 0-25%

Boston College-great
Boston University-great
Carnegie Mellon University-good
Cornell University-goo
Harvard College-go
Ithaca College-great
Johns Hopkins University-good
Northeastern University-dont know this school
New York University-goo and half a 'd'
Princeton University-go
Yale University-go

lets face it, your sat and satii could improve

why do u resent me? im sorry if i did anything, i am just trying to predict what i am longing to find out.....

I don't resent you at all. Like I said, you seem very nice. I didn't say I resent you, what I said was that I resent the process. I resent that playing the oboe means more than having a perfect academic record. In my opinion, the goal of these schools should be to educate the best and the brightest and not to have great orchestra sections. That should be left for the music schools. Not to offend you or anyone else at all, because I am sure you are a nice kid and you may deserve to get in even without your oboe.

thanks, anyone else comment??????

bump............

Even though you are a hispanic oboe player, you seriously lack distinction in your ECs that the Ivies look for. Almost all of them are either band-related or just clubs aside from the TV thing; no matter how rare of a minority you are at a particular college, you are going to need something to really set you apart at one of the upper Ivies, namely HYP. At the others you stand a good shot, with BU, Ithaca, Northeastern almost certainly safeties.

Unfortunately, oboe means "oh no."

bump..............

Bring up the SATS, enjoy your music, and I think it is great that the IVYs teach to the whole student...you are on the right track, just have some safeties, everyone does and there is no shame in that...itsl like having extra reeds in your case

Samp: you are way off base, the best and the brightest in what- reading and math? Music is important in life and well rounded students and people are important...what kind of school would it be if everyone was exactly the same, if there was no art no music and I am assuming by your attitude, no sports...what would you have in school?

PS I played oboe in high school and it is REALLY HARD and not many people play it...

I was recently accepted to Columbia ED and I too play Oboe/English Horn, so go double reeds!!

I sent a CD to all my colleges of myself playing the instruments with some piano accompaniment. I think that being a URM and a double reed player will help significantly. I think you will get into some of your reach schools, but maybe not all.

Best of luck and continue that oboe playing!! Oboe is the best instrument!

What I found surprisingly is that so many students have earned this info on playing the "uncomon" instrument, just to use it as a factor for admissions now.

Which means that, in the future, the oboe, the french horn, bassoon, and other "uncommon" instrument's ratios will increase. So its all up to mere skill level.
