Huh? playing the Uncommon Instrument? Lets have an orchestra will all violins, or all flutes? that makes sense..its like having all linebackers on a team...

Look at the symphonies written- gee - they include all the uncommon instruments...it is so much harder to play the oboe, the basson, the english horn than a clarinet...and lets see, spend hours practicing, taking lessons, making reeds, just to be different? I say Bravo!!! I was asked to play the english horn (related to Oboe) because I could. Often, if you are good at your first instrument, your music teacher will ask you to take up another instrument to round out the orchestra...

I agree with citygirlsmom. I do really believe that the oboe is very difficult. I started playing 2 1/2 years ago and have become very good in this short time. I am hoping that the Ivies see that I have gotten so far in so little time.....

Does any one else have any comments on what my chances might be at any of the schools that I an applying to. (BTW, I just got acceptances from Ithaca and Northeastern)

Also, my stats are in the first post! THanks!!!

hey man, u look like a pretty strong candidate. im sure you' ll get into at least one of the ivy league schools u applied to. I hear some of them give madd oboe scholarships. haha, good luck.

There's more to it than that. You may have a lower than Ivy verbal score but english is not your native language, right? Your academics are very good and you certainly have a passion for music with an unusual element. Hispanics are also very under-represented at these top schools. I'd say you have a very good chance at all of them. I have a feeling you'll get picked up by one of the ivies but if not, you choose a great list of schools and I think you'll do very well at any of them. Good luck.

ok... I am not the person for predicting chances but I would just like to second ( for the 100th time) that oboe is very hard to play. It is hard to find a teacher ( even harder to find a good one), It is hard to maintain the stamina, and even harder to actually create music. IDK how many of you saw the OC last week, one of the characters was practicing and her tone and form were just bad.
On another note, I played piano for ten years and have been playing oboe for 7. I have always been able to play but I have never had really good tone or the greatest form ( ok form and tone but not great). But only in the last year have they improved tremendously and that is because I switched teachers.

I doubt schools other than the music conservatories will admit students just for the instrument they play to fill out a section. It will probably seen as an awesome EC.
