Just some brief information:
My name is Shareef
Grade: Going into Junior Year (11th)
GPA: 4.7 (Weighted). Roughly 3.7 (un-weighted)
Class rank: 280. 33% out of class of 800+
I have taken a practice SAT and scored a 1700 (with no preparation or studying) *Note this is a practice SAT from a college board book, not an administered SAT or a PSAT.
Sports: Soccer
Volunteering: Habitat for Humanity, Avila volunteer soccer training.
Clubs: HOSA, will be enrolling in DECA
I have not taken a practice ACT yet, but I will take one before this summer ends. I plan I scoring about a 30 composite score.
I am a hard working student and make sure I get everything done, however I can be lazy which caused a drop in my grades resulting in a low GPA. If I work harder during my Junior year (which I will) I except to have a 5.2 GPA weighted.
Please let me know if you have any knowledge about the difficulty into getting into UNC and what I need to do in order to increase my chances.
I am also taking AP Biology, AP Pchycology, AP English 3, Pre-AP Pre-Calculus during my junior year.
Thank you!
Just a quick q, what does your school weigh your GPA to? 6.0?
Anyway, UNC Chapel Hill is pretty selective. Your GPA seems to be in line. As for test scores I’d want at least a 1950 or 29 to feel comfortable applying.
It’s also more difficult for out of state students to get in.
If you get good grades and good SAT or ACT scores you shouldn’t have a problem getting in if you’re in state. Try to get some leadership positions and dedicate more time into your ECs.
Are you in state or out of state?
Out if state. But I do have family that lives in state, so I’m wondering if I could move in with them after my senior year then apply, or something like that.
Very, very low chance since you’re OOS. In-state possibly, but it isn’t looking good for OOS. OOS acceptance rate is 18% and tens of thousands apply to get in. You don’t have any hooks (URM, legacy, in state, athlete recruit) I assume. Also, no you can’t move in with your family and apply in-state. To qualify as in-state for UNC, you have to establish legal residence in NC for over 12 months. Find some target schools and maybe keep UNC as a high reach.
GPA seems good (just a little low), however cant say much without test scores- that could make it or break it
Also, try to get involved in a few more ECs
UNC has a 29% acceptance rate so it is relatively selective
Good luck!
I checked your thread, I am sorry I do not have too much knowledge on the college you would like to attend, but from the looks of the information you provided you look set for very picky colleges! However I do have some questions, for getting into UNC you suggest I do well on my tests (SAT and ACT), as well as bring my GPA up (a rough estimation of my GPA by the end of next year will be about 5.2 weighted.)
Also forgot to add, although I doubt this effects anything about me getting accepted as OOS or in state. I did live in NC for 6 years, highly doubt that counts as it seems slightly ridiculous, but it’s a question I am wondering about, if I was a previous resident in NC could I be accepted as in state?
