What are the chances to UC: Berkeley, LA and SD

So far, here are my son’s stats:

SAT 2 Math: 740
SAT 2 Bio: will be taking next month.
AP Scores: Calc AB: 4, Bio: 3, US History: 3, Physics C: 3

ECs: Varsity BB, Varsity VB (11th and 12th grades)

Could you please chance him to the various UCs? Among CSUs, he is applying to only CalPoly Pomona and CalPoly SLO and thinks UCI, UCSB and UCSC are his safety schools.

What are your opinions?

Thank you so much!

I think Cal Poly Pomona and UCSC would be safeties, UCI and UCSB would not be safeties.

With a UC weighted-capped GPA of 3.85, UCI and UCSB are probably closer to high match or low reach (definitely nowhere close to safeties). UCSC is probably more like a match.

@ucbalumnus: so essentially, we have to be just looking at the plain GPA and SAT scores then and trying to apply? How about considering the Sports, ECs and the clubs? We kept thinking that his rigor of classes combined with his other activties would kind of make up for a relatively lower GPA and SAT and are wondering if that was a wrong thinking now :frowning: Do you think his GPA and scores will not be looked at in conjunction with his other activities? I am so confused…thank you!

For UCs, courses and grades/GPA are not the only factors, but they are the biggest factors. All of the other factors like test scores, extracurriculars, essays, etc. can move the needle a little, but will not compensate for a substantial difference in courses and grades/GPA. Remember, California is a large state, with no shortage of other applicants who have similar or greater course rigor, but substantially higher grades/GPA.

@ucbalumnus: Thank you! So, looks like he needs to apply more OOS or state schools…I was looking at SJSU and that seems to be pretty decent too…

Is he interested in UCR and UCM?

SJSU’s past thresholds for admission are listed at http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/ . Note that the eligibility index is GPA * 800 + SATCR + SATM or GPA * 200 + ACT * 10 (CSU GPA should be the same as UC GPA, and CSU superscores SAT and ACT).

Yeah, I did calculate that eligibility index and he has a 4510 …which seemed good ? No, he does not want to apply to UCR or UCM :frowning:

CPP: Safety
UCSC: Match
SLO/UCSB/UCI: High Match-Low Reach

I would add SJSU/SDSU/CSULB as Match and Safety schools.

http://www.sjsu.edu/admissions/impaction/impactionresultsfreshmen/index.html indicates that, for frosh applicants for fall 2016 at SJSU, an eligibility index of 4510 would have cleared the threshold for all majors except computer science (4550), though it would have cleared the threshold only barely for accounting (4450) and undeclared non-local (4500). But economics (3000) and physics (2900) were easier to get into. No neuroscience, but he would have cleared the thresholds for biology (3300) and psychology (3450) easily. However, thresholds could change this coming year, due to changes in each major’s popularity.

Should have added that UCSD/UCLA and UCB are Reach schools. UCSD is still possible with outstanding essays.

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:

UCB: 12%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 39%
UCSB: 49%
UCD: 52%
UCI: 57%
UCSC: 83%
UCR: 90%
UCM: 92%
