My son is a raising Senior from MD. He is considered international student because of visa type.
I would like to seek advice on his chances of admission and financial aid in some of the good colleges. He is interested in economics/ engineering.

SAT Scores:
2060 ( 730 verbal, 680 Maths and 650 W) first attempt and taking again in Oct 14.

Subject SATs:
790 us history
800 world history
740 MathII

AP subjects:
Us history 5
World history 5
Macro 5
Micro economics 5
A P Lang 4
A p environmental science 5
Ap NSL 5
AP Geography 5
National AP Scholar ( in junior year)

He is taking 6 AP courses during his Senior year, all of them very challenging.

About ECs:

He did an internship with the World Bank during the summer of sophomore year and in India during this summer with an NGO working on rural development and poverty.
He is an officer in a couple of Clubs in the school including The Academic ( team member)
He formed a Band during his middle school and continues with the band with his friends - performed at many places for free including clubs in DC area.

He might not get good financial aid in case you’re wondering, but any college like Purdue or a big ten school would likely accept him. Top engineering schools like MIT/Stanford that offer great financial aid seem to be out of his reach. Did you mention his unweighted GPA?

Sorry, but I have to agree with @Smarty99. Most ivys as well as MIT/Stanford/CalTech seem to be out of reach due to SAT scores and GPA. What would you consider to be a “good” college?

Do you mean It’s Academic? Was he/is he on the TV show because if he was, he should put that on his apps (especially if the team got to the playoffs or further).

If you need financial aid, he should consider applying to schools that will really want him. Otherwise, consider applying to schools with honors programs and scholarship programs (assuming that you mean merit aid).

His AP scores are good, but I think his scores are a little low for “top” schools. The average UW GPA for the ivies is 3.8, if I recall correctly - and the sat score averages are pretty much all over 2200. If he can NAIL his SAT he’ll be a little more competitive, but realistically if he wants to be competitive at Ivies/Stanford/etc he needs a GPA that’s above 3.7 or 3.8.

Thanks, Sungoose and Ruprex for your advice.
Yes he is in Its Academic and was on local TV. His GPA was poor in his sophomore year because of music and the band. But in his junior year he got 5 out of 5 in WGPA and 4 out of 4 in ungpa
Considering his current status which schools he should apply?
Any advice is deeply appreciated.
