What are the chances?

Well, here goes nothing. I'm hoping to get into the COE for Computer Engineering.

High School Attended: Port Huron Northern, Port Huron Michigan (Sad, I know)
GPA (Unweighted): (As of Junior Year) 3.8
ACT: 29 (Retesting in March)
AP Classes: Took AP World History and AP Language and Composition my Sophomore year. Taking AP Calc, AP Government, and AP Literature and Composition this year.
I plan on taking 4-5 classes at our local community college my senior year, as my school only offers 9 AP classes, and three of them have little to no interest to me.

Extra Curricular:
Secretary of Drama Club my Sophomore year. Been a member of the drama club since Freshman year.
Played football starting Freshman year.
Applied for National Honor Society (Decisions have not been made yet)
Interned at a computer store as a computer programmer starting the summer before my Freshman year.

I know they aren't GREAT, but here's hoping.

I think you’ll be okay if you can raise your ACT a little. The average for CoE is 31.

Yeah, I’m planning on taking it one or two more times before I apply. Thanks for the advice!

NP, you should get in for sure then, as long as you’ve had a strong background in math and science. I think your internship will also boost your app a little. The fact that you’re taking so courses at a CC is also great because it’ll show college that you’ve exhausted the resources at your high school, and that you’re willing to take classes outside to go above and beyond what’s required.

I’m gonna bump this up to see what I get. I’m doing rather well in my classes right now, A’s in my programming classes, AP Lit class, and I think my AP Gov class. My Physics class is a High B low A, and my Calc grade is a low B to a B minus. Does that calc hurt my chances at all?

Your GPA wasn’t the issue, the ACT score needed to be bumped, and if you haven’t retaken that and/or applied yet, you’ve lessened your chances of being admitted. If you’ve retaken the ACT post the scores. If you haven’t applied yet, what are you waiting for?

I’m still a junior in high school. I have to take the ACT in school around March, and then I plan on retaking it in June/July. I’ll be applying next September or so.

ximplosionx, yeah I’m a junior as well and my stats are very similar to yours: 29 ACT, 3.9 uw GPA (rigorous schedule), mediocre ec’s. If we bump that ACT up a point or two we should be fine for engineering imo.

Being a junior changes everything. Your schedule is very difficult especially since you are still in grade 11. Just take more courses at the your local community college and study hard for that ACT. I wouldn’t worry about it, you will definitely raise it if you put your mind to it. Also APPLY EARLY and you’re set.

I suggest you make a rough draft of your essay (finishing is even better) in the summer so you can send all the materials asap in september or october 2010.

try to keep your calc grade at least a B and study hard for the AP test. You don’t want any C’s in your junior year whatsoever

I don’t think getting a B in calc should be too hard. I’ve got a C+ at the end of this marking period, and the grades don’t reset each marking period, so they aren’t averaged. I started off last year with a C- in AP World, and ended up with a B in the class.

I’m gonna say match. The ACT score is a bit low and could be bumped a little bit, but between your courseload, GPA, and ECs as well as your in-state status, I would think you’d be fine. As others have said, keep your Junior year GPA strong because you can really hurt yourself with a downward trend. Good luck and GO BLUE!
