What are the disadvantages of being a spring admit?

I am a cal spring 2006 admit, and I am trying to get some information regarding the pros and cons of being a spring admit (housing, academics… etc). I need some information so I can decide whether I would go to UCSD or Cal.

you get to take classes at extension for 1 semester, and you get 2nd priority for housing. however all the spring admits i know live in regular housing and even got my first choice for housing that i DID NOT GET...

S was a Spring Admit this year, and it has worked out fine for him. The Fall Freshmen Extension program has some positives depending on how you view it. 1) classes are smaller. All his classes were 30-40 people (or smaller?); 2) the list of classes to select from is smaller, which can make it easier to choose. S took a great Classics class. 3) I think the classes were just as rigorous as this semester. 4)You sign up for classes in a different manner (neither good or bad, just a difference) 5)Everyone in the classes is a Freshman (again neither good or bad, jsut a diffeence)

I suggest deciding on whether you want to be at CAL or UCSD, and not let the Spring admit aspect be a major part of your decision. It will only affect 1 semester out of your 4+ years as an undergrad.

good luck

hum de dum looks around yep, whatever avoidingwork said. dont worry about it, it doesnt mean anything at all........

Avoidingwork - is your S from out of state? My s was just accepted Spring 06 still deciding what the negatives and postives are. We're from NY -he's also strongly considering Cornell, Univ of Rochester and Brandeis

sp0708 - My S is in-state. I live in the Bay Area, and lived in Berkeley for 15+ years. I'm happy to answer any questions about Spring Admits - housing, extension, etc. and Berkeley.

i have enrolled in the extension program. the only thing i am afraid of is that i wont be seeing my friends who are going to berkeley with me. are the chances of getting into dorms good? do people look at you differently because you are a FPF student?

No more advantages or disadvantages really than a fall admit. The place is more than large enough for spring admits to find a niche. At worst, you might graduate a semester late, but if the though of not graduating in 4 years really bugs you -- you shouldn't go to Cal anyway. (Sorry, just the truth!)

And enjoy the Extension classes, you basically get your Fall Semester outta the way, and don't have to worry about the grades going on your transcript. All you have to do is get like a 2.5 or 3.0 -- which is what the extension people I lived with told me. I was a full admit, so I didn't have to worry.

It's not really that big of a deal. Besides, you get to miss the crappy weather (if you defer to spring) for the most part. Spring tends to be nice and warm and sunny with moderate rain-showers here and there, though you do have to put up with January and February, which can sometimes be a pain in the butt, especially if you don't like cold.

hey avoidingwork,

can you check out this thread about spring admits?

thanks in advance.

oh yeah, can anybody give me advice on whether to attend the fall extension program?

because I have this extra time, I might use it to go on a short term mission's trip to Japan and Taiwan in addition to self studying and working in the SD area, cause my dad works at SD

Right now im about 90-10 for Berkeley (cause visiting their awesome campus gave them the edge over SD)
