Is the cjl available as housing for freshmen? I suspect that it may not be because it is not on North Campus, and Cornell is insistent about all freshmen living together on North Campus.

Note this page from the cjl's Web site, which seems to indicate that housing there is only available to upperclassmen.

why do so many students choose to live off campus? I heard a crazy statistic, something like only 47% live on campus! That seems weird since Cornell basically provides all of the entertainment in that area.

"off campus" means right next to it + pretty much in it. It's a very self contained campus so everyone still is part of it...just a little farther away lol. Lots of people live in collegetown and such.

Two of the dorms are in Collegetown and technically "off-campus" but they are part of Cornell housing. Many of the Collegetown apartments and homes are closer to certain classes than some of the "on campus" housing. For instance, Engineering classes are very close to Collegtown. It's a wonderful experience living in an apartment with your friends as an upperclassman. Take a look at how close Collegtown is to Central Campus where the majority of classes are (pink area in SW corner of map). http://www.cornell.edu/img/maps/large_search.pdf
