What are the dorms like?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the dorms are like? I went there recently on a campus tour and loved the school, but we did not get to see the dorms.

Thank you!

If you are a Rodman or Echols scholar do you have to live in the dorms all four years?

CRL123, you do not have to live in dorms all four years. D has really enjoyed the “suite style” living- she lives with other Rodman/Echols scholars and it has been great. She’ll be living off grounds next year though. Lots of apartments to choose from.

I would say about 1/2 to 2/3 of people live off grounds after their first year. There are wonderful options near the corner or off of JPA. I’m a first-year right now, and I’m living in an apartment next year and then in my sorority house the year after… its a pretty common course. Come to UVA, its AMAZING!

I just went on a tour there thursday… no air conditioning in dorms. Or the first-year dorms at least. This may pose a problem:(

There is no air conditioning unless you are in Kellogg ( I think?) or Brown College. Or Hereford. Everyone just has fans. It’s not that big of a deal.

My son spent 2wks there last summer in July and like other posters here I would agree, it just wasn’t that big of a deal. Everyone has fans and there is such a small timeframe that might be uncomfortable. Don’t make your decision based on A/C that may only be a factor your first year (if it bothers you). I would also agree that he liked the suite-style living very much.

It’ll be hot for the first and last few weeks of the school year. Even right now, with final exercises just a few weeks away, the weather is beautiful and AC isn’t needed.

In fact, the HVAC is out in Peabody Hall today. We’re just fine…and it’s nice and quiet without the blowers on. :)
