So far from what I hear (although most is from outsiders), Vanderbilt is bad at just about every sport out there, including the big two (football, and soccer). Thus, I was wondering if u guys could tell me what you think your best sports teams are, and which teams are the most popular

Their basketball team (men's) has been been pretty good in recent years. They had Matt Freiji (sp) and he was really good.

wow. historically, vanderbilt is good at every sport except football. Baseball America predicted us to go to College World Series for baseball (top 8 in the country). Our basketball team made Sweet 16 in NCAA two years ago and after a rebuilding season we should at least make the tourney this year. Jay Cutler, our star QB was a first round pick in the NFL draft and our team has improved immensely with prospects the last few years (SEC is arguably the best conference in football). We also dominate country club sports like golf, tennis, etc.

I agree with nymets. Vanderbilt excells at many sports, but I would like to add that when I was recently there I found out that even though the football teams doesn't always win, that is not why students are so enthusiastic about it. I don't think Vandy fans don't go to the games intending to win them all, but to get dressed up, have fun, and show support. So when you said which was most popular, that doesn't necessarily mean it's the sport Vandy is best at.

How is soccer part of the big 2? Seems to me like the big 3 would be football, basketball, and baseball, of which we are good in 2 of those.

yeah my bad, I meant football and bball, not soccer.

They have an awesome tennis team, although not quite as good as a few years ago. When S was first there, Bobby Reynolds was ranked #1 in NCAA singles. He now plays professionally, although with limited success. The womens basketball team has traditionally been very strong also.

Vandy could use a kicker, if you have any experience.

Only kidding, I'd take Vandy's kicker over the Hogs' anyday.

Game that brought Vandy to Sweet 16, Vandy - NC State 2004

I just can't call a team that has missed the NCAA Tourney (which is the case for men's bball) "good". At the current moment, Vanderbilt's best athletic programs are baseball and women's basketball, I believe. Unfortunately, Vandy has not been able to replicate Stanford, Duke, and Northwestern's success as being a Div I powerhouse in addition to having top academics.

freenotype, our basketball team was rebuilding last year. We are definitely not a Duke-caliber team in basketball but the team should definitely make the tourney this year. Foster and Byars are NBA-caliber players.

Anyway, I forgot to add they've missed the NCAA tourney two years in a row after the Sweet 16. Regarding that "rebuilding" business, did "they" not say the same thing last year about the year before? Is this also going to be rebuilding year if they don't go dancing? And then next year, too, as Stallings will be outta there?

Pardon my pessimism. It just baffles me how Stanford, Duke and UCLA can win every non-revenue sport NCAA championship, while Vanderbilt can't even get to a Final Four once.

http://story.scout.com/a.z?s=189&p=2&c=576232

Most analysts have us making the tournament this year. Our team is solid but we don't have much depth (an injury would be detrimental). Anyways, we are not going to be making the Final-Four anytime soon. But that doesn't mean we don't have a solid program -- we are competitive in the SEC and recruit alongside quality teams like Notre Dame, Georgetown, etc. If Stallings doesn't perform this year, he will likely be on the hot seat.

btw, we will dominate Duke in football this year if it makes you feel any better

feenotype,

the lacrosse team went to the final four 2-3 years ago, our 2 years old bowling program came in 5th last year(yeah i know, but it still counts), the women's golf team just came in first at an invitational where 6 of the top 12 teams in the nation were present, women's tennis went to the final four 2 years ago, men's tennis went to the national championship game about 3-4 years ago and is going to rebuild for the next 1-2 years after the coach left to start up a private club(aka $$$), and like you already mentioned, women's bball and baseball(picked to go to the college world series this year).

Granted Vandy isn't at Stanford's level, but maybe you should learn to pay more attention to the non-revenue sports instead of whining that they don't exist.

I know that Vandy has a club hockey team, are they any good? I also love playing ultimate frisbee, any frisbee clubs there?

Don't know about hockey, but S played ultimate for two years on the club team and had a great time. Had to give it up due to injury, but missed it after he quit.
