What are the key features of a great SAT essay?

We have all been there. This is a thread to accumulate the features that constitute a 12 essay..

structure

coherence

good handwriting?

varied examples --> or one really really good example

Wow naidu90, that is a really comprehensive post!! I am surprised you took so much time off to actually write this amazing post :D;):D:p

... Well... I always turn to historical events. :/

So my essays basically sound APUSHy... ^^. But hey, it got me an 11.

length apparantly, according to that professor who found that correlation.

Length is by far the most important part of the essay.

Next comes examples...three is the way to go, all from different areas (i used literature, a movie, and personal experience, but history is probably better than a movie)

You'll need a good intro where you give your stance on the topic. that's verrry important. I always like to tie my intro and conclusion together. Give as many body paragraphs as you have examples.

Try to prewrite for no more than 3-4 minutes, and then write like hell until you fill up both pages.

Follow these steps and you're guarenteed at least a 10. i got an 11 and it wasn't really that dynamic of an essay.

I really dont think you need three examples, I did one for mine but I just broke it off into different subtopics and I got a 10.

Prompt: A colleague of the great scientist James Watson remarked that Watson was always "lounging around, arguing about problems instead of doing experiments." He concluded that "There is more than one way of doing good science." It was Watson's form of idleness, the scientist went on to say, that allowed him to solve "the greatest of all biological problems: the discovery of the structure of DNA." It is a point worth remembering in a society overly concerned with efficiency.

Assignment:

Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, or observations.

LENGTH!!! is Super Important. You should fill up the spaces provided! And SPECIFIC EXAMPLES!!

Jlime, you're right in saying three examples aren't always necessary. in fact, many examples of 11-12 essays only include one. I'm just saying it's a good rule of thumb to use three specific, varied examples. It definitely increases one's chances of getting a high score, and it also adds content, thus making filling both pages much easier.

debate_addict - what are you talking about

I was kiddin naidu!!
Wasnt that obvious? :p:p

noooooooooo....................

sounded like you were alluding to something

Anybody else use 2 examples? It helps write a good, coherent conclusion. Of course, only do this if your examples are well-supported. I would not do 2 examples with either one being a personal example.

I only used 2 examples, one from literature and one from history

youre all wrong!
The most important part of the essay is your persuasiveness.
If youre persuasive it will get you a solid 10.
Structure is second most important.
Then length
Then grammar/spelling
Then vocabulary.

And ive done a lot of research on examples. people with top scores tend to use only one general personal example, and support it with stories about that personal example.

My essay was about my dad telling me to go pre-med because it would make me lots of money. I made 3 solid paragraphs out of it. ending with me getting in award in what I enjoyed although i got no money from it. i expect an 11. so does Kaplan. cause i did everything he told me! >.<

i hate odd scores.
it means that one punk judge thought it wasn't good enough to get that extra point, whilst the other did. ...if only another judge graded it....
