I was wondering if you guys can list 3-5 technical skills that are most important in a business internship or job.

For example, Excel skills, is it one of the most useful technical skill to learn?? If not, what other ones are more important? What about reading and analyzing financial statements?

While not really a "technical’ skill, I would say that the ability to make a presentation in front of a group of people is valuable and somewhat rare. And I do NOT mean having the fanciest power point presentation. The ability to engage an audience is critical.

I would agree engaging an audience is an critical skill, after reading this article I stumbled upon recently: [One Skill That Will Boost Your Value By Fifty Percent in 2014 - Forbes](One Skill That Will Boost Your Value By Fifty Percent in 2014)

But what do you think is the best way to improve public speaking/engaging an audience???

The biggest jump in my salary other than when I got my master’s degree is when I mastered excel. Nothing fancy, local commuter college, MSIS degree, but back when I was struggling as a single mom as an administrative assistant - Excel was worth an additional about $3 per hour. I’m now in IT support for a consulting company and yes, the consultants are MASTERS of Excel.

The only way to improve public speaking is to speak publicly. Practice in a mirror if need be.

"And I do NOT mean having the fanciest power point presentation. "

Actually, on a day-to-day basis, strong ppt skills are one of the most important skills for a business internship or job. Engaging an audience may be more helpful in getting a job but would rarely be used by an intern.
