What are the must haves for new students?

M3S's,

Any word yet on whether your son has the numbers still for the loft bed people on campus?

Thanks !!!

jdm-Sorry, we went through his stuff and no numbers turned up. I didn't really think he would still have the flier from last August, but stranger things have turned up long after their time. :)

Oh well, thanks for trying, I appreciate it. I'll find it eventually.

from post #15 of this thread…

is that still true?

yes, still true.

I don’t understand how the students can order from bedloft.com, if the existing bed has the “built-in cushioned back to make it like a sofa, with hidden storage behind it.” It sounds like the existing bed is bolted in place.

And, is there a way to half-loft the beds from bedloft.com? Or is half-lofting a bed (where it’s high enough for a 30" tall fridge underneath, but not fully lofted) not possible at UM freshman dorms?

The way it works is the back is built such that it is nearly the exact height of the mattress. You can pull the mattress out at night to make it a twin bed, and push it in, under the overhang, during the day to make it a pseudo-mattress. The bed is not bolted in place.

And what happens to the ‘built-in cushioned back’ if you want to have a loft?

I assume the ‘built-in cushioned back’ stays attached to the wall; does the loft bed simply go over it? So that you have the storage compartment, with fridge and plastic drawers in front of the storage compartment, and the bed is above it all?

That’s exactly correct, the loft is just built immediately next to the cushion.

I’d also like to add that these cushions lift up for storage area, and there’s an area between them and the wall (under which you can push a non-lofted bed) where you can store stuff, like cell phones and glasses of water, and where there is a plug.

@rankinr

I think this is one of those things that makes total sense to you when you are there, looking at it. And absolutely no sense without a photo…

If anyone has a link for a photo to explain how the storage space relates to a lofted bed, it’d be appreciated!

If the loft is built ‘immediately next to the cushion’ it sounds as if there is deadspace, between the wall and the loft (at the area above the cushion). So, you gain storage space under the loft, you lose floor space (because the loft is not flush up against the wall)

this is a photo underneath my lofted bed this past year.

here is my whole side of the room, so you can see where the TV in the previous picture is located in context

@splitthestreets -

you did a really really good thing today, to help this compulsive mom, by sharing your photos. This will really show my daughter what it will look like to have one lofted bed, and one non-lofted bed. And it also gives ideas about where to put the fridge and tv!!!

thank you.

:) you’re welcome! It was really nice to have one non-lofted bed (as long as you become friends with your roommate) because as you can see, the non-lofted bed makes a good couch for movie-watching.

These are of my daughter’s room in the freshmen dorm called Stanford. Her bed was lofted.

Thanks for sharing these (again!)
