It's decision time. What are the biggest pros and cons of Pitt?

cons: the city is horrible. the campus isnt too nice either.
andd i forget the pros. i dropped this college after realizing the above.

City is great. Not too large and certainly not too small. Friendly people. Plenty to do in the city and good sports and spirit at Pitt. Great medical programs and good engineering and other majors. Depends on what you’re looking for.

If you give cons/pros, might as well explain, or its just a dismissible opinion.

Very nice ■■■■■■■■, ohhowrandom.

The student population is kind of unconnected from each other.

I stress that these are just the negatives; positives have been listed elsewhere.

The arts are kind of under-represented here. If you’re majoring in film/art/etc. I’d look into somewhere else. Pitt is much stronger in science and engineering.

It can be pretty noisy at night, with hospital helicopters and so on. It is an urban area, but there are tons of parks and little neighborhoods nearby. The noise is essentially limited to those living on Lower Campus (Towers, Forbes, Lothrop, the Quad, etc.)

The weather is unpredictable. Winters can be pretty cold and summers hot, but the weather will change rapidly from week to week (and year to year).

Most of the meal plan restaurants are closed during Spring Break. That was irritating.

The only negative I can think of right now is that part of the campus is on a hill. That means if you want to go from Towers to the Peterson Events Center, some UPMC buildings, or Chevron Science Center it is a steep hike up.

Btw, ohhowrandom and clfdwlr appear to be high school students, so take what they say with a grain of salt. I’m not sure how someone who doesn’t even go here can say with confidence that the student population is unconnected.

my bad. i visited the place and i didnt like it. i guess its a biased opinion since i dont like cities all too much, and the other colleges i visited had nicer campuses. it is all opinion anyway. as they say, always visit the college for yourself.

Negatives (offset by academics and college life):

Huge hill to get to Upper Campus.

Crossing Fifth Avenue (watch out for buses).

Towers architecture (offset by freshman experience there).

Fattening restaurants like the Dirty “O” right outside your front door (be sure to walk up hill to upper campus some).

Approach to campus on Forbes gritty looking, gets better once you hit campus.

Snowy winter (distant memory now).

Distinct campus but urban, not for everyone.

Eagles fans.

There are Eagles fans at Pitt?
I don’t mind my daughter going to school with druggies and rapists, but I draw the line well before Eaglet fans. Hard to believe Pitt has fallen so low.

^^^ Funny!

While the academics at Pitt are generally strong, there are some “slacker” students who are doing the minimum to get by. Whether they flunk out or not, I don’t know.

^They’re not so bad, because they make the curve better for everyone. :P

Every school (even Ivy League schools) has their slackers. You’ve got your smart slackers -those who get 4.0s and never seem to work and slackers who used to be smart slackers whose study skills don’t translate to college.

Eagles fans do help the curve.

There are slacker slackers too. Probably at every school too.

As others have said, only negatives, positives are elsewhere:
- Big honking hill. When you have 8:30AM gym classes at the Pete, it’s annoying to walk up that hill…especially with 2+ feet of snow.
- Buses SUCK. Sure, we can ride them for “free” (it’s included in tuition) but they’re unreliable. This mostly applies to city buses but goes for Pitt buses as well, sometimes.
- There’s not a whole lot to do - in my opinion, at least (I don’t party).
- You’ll encounter some downright BAD teachers. This would apply to almost every school, but I still feel the need to state it.

Also, I just want to say that the noise issue is solved easily with earplugs at night :)

I don’t party either, and I plan on applying to Pitt. How serious are you about the nothing to do part? It won’t persuade me from applying, but would like to know anyways…

Not a whole lot to do? You’re in the middle of a decent-sized city, within a couple miles of nearly 10 other schools and the numerous neighborhoods that make up Pittsburgh. Have you been anywhere outside of Oakland? There’s a massive park a few blocks down the street (Schenley) and an even larger one a couple miles away (Frick).

I’m sorry, but you sound like one the kids who sits in their dorm all day and complains about there “not being enough to do.” Believe you me, there’s enough of them around here. If you actually want to complain about “nothing to do”, go to a rural school where there aren’t 300,000+ people in a 5-mile radius.

^lol, burned.

Love the big hill comments. When we first toured the campus, my daughter’s comment was: “I am going to have GREAT calves.” Class half full, I guess.
