What are the NYC Unifieds?

I don't understand how these auditions work. =/

Many of the major MT programs participate in Unified Auditions in February of each year in Los angeles, New York, Chicago and Las Vegas. All of the schools show up at those locations on the designated dates, and hold auditions for the following school year. This makes it possible for prospective students to audition for a number of schools in a central location without traveling to each school if they prefer. Typically you would submit your application to the school and then sign up for an audition time, either at the school or at the Unified of your choice if that school is participating. There are some schools that do not participate in the Unifieds and you would have to audition in person or on video if allowed at those schools. There are some others that may not participate in Unifieds but do hold regional auditions in various cities. The best thing to do is to come up with a list of schools you are going to apply to and then carefully check each of their websites to see when and where they hold auditions. If you decide to go the Unified route, be sure to sign up for auditions early to get the time you want; some actually fill up. There are also some schools that allow walk-ins: you can show up at the Unifieds and audition if they have room, even if you have not made an appointment. However, do not count on getting a spot in this manner. Also many of the schools hold both a vocal/ monologue audition and then may have a separate group dance call at a different time. Be sure to check out the requirements for each school. You can usually fit 3 or 4 auditions in a day - some do 5 but that starts getting stressful.

There are pros and cons to Unifieds vs. on-campus auditions. Pros of Unifies: lower travel costs, all of the schools in one location, less school time missed. Cons of Unifieds: if you happen to be sick that weekend, it could affect your chances for all of your schools, a little stressful (didn’t bother my daughter, but does bother some), don’t get to see campuses.

Just remember that most of the schools require that you submit an application to the school before you can sign up for any auditions - Unified or on campus. Be sure to check each school’s website for specifics.

Do schools who usually have dance calls on campus have them at the Unifieds?

^^^Many do, yes. But you’d have to check with EACH school what elements are done at the Unified auditions as there is no single generality to make.
