What are the odds?

Hello! I'm a Junior in Indiana. I've been researching colleges since I was in 8th grade, and since last year, I've fallen completely in love with Swarthmore. I was wondering what my chances were of getting in.
I took the SATs in January and got a 2190- 790 crit. read, 670 math, and 730 writing. I haven't taken the ACT yet, but I'm expecting a 30 or above. I have a 4.0 and am a full IB student. I volunteer regularly with a victim advocacy center, am involved in 3 competitive choirs, have stage managed the last 3 shows at my school and was the assistant director if one show. I also started my own club and am in the process of entering the National Honors Society. Am I up to snuff, or should I retake the SAT to raise my math score a bit?

Yes, retake the SAT to raise your math score.

readsalot, have you heard about the Discover Swarthmore program? It’s an annual thing, and from what I’ve seen (I went this year), it definitely helped students to form a better idea of what Swarthmore is.

[Discover Swarthmore! :: Admissions & Aid :: Swarthmore College](http://www.swarthmore.edu/admissions-and-aid/discover-swarthmore.xml)

Yeah… but do you have some reason to think that the OP is a URM? It looks like that program is just for URMs, not for other students.

Readalot, your CR score is superb, and certainly more difficult to achieve than a similar math score. Congrats! Since you are a junior, you might want to think about taking the SAT again in the early fall. Swarthmore, along with many other schools, will superscore the SAT, so you won’t lose that 790.

If you can’t raise your SAT’s don’t think of it as the end of the world. I was just accepted with the same SAT composite score and an equally low Math score. If you have great extracurriculars getting accepted is definitely within reach. Just remember, you already have an above average SAT score at Swat!

More details:
Took part in the Richard Luger Symposium for Tomorrow’s Leaders, will be a participant in Hoosier Girls State, and a 4.0 unweighted GPA in my school means that I have never scored below a 95% in a class. So I know that I should retake the SAT; is there anything else I could do to improve my odds? (I’ll be visiting the college during my spring break, but from my extensive research, it seems like everything I’ve ever wanted in a college.)

Use the Gruber books to prep for the math SAT. :slight_smile: When you visit, try to do more than go on the tour. If they are in session, sit in on a class (that is what sold my D on Swat and made her decide to apply this year, waiting on RD decision now). Visit any buildings you are interested in that aren’t on the tour, eat in the cafeteria, etc. The “Why Swat” essay is really the only supplemental essay, but I think they take it quite seriously and want a thoughtful answer.

Your SAT is good enough, but better won’t hurt.

I didn’t take the SAT, but my math score was relatively low and I still got in and impressed the admissions office enough to get my acceptance letter early even on RD. I made up for it with very high SAT II and English/Writing scores. So retake it if you really want to feel more secure with the decision, but your chances seem pretty good. Make sure to demonstrate interest. =)

Discuss finances with your parents, run the net price calculator and if the numbers are good, apply ED.
