Clemson University
North Carolina State University
University Of Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh Campus
Purdue University - West Lafayette
Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University
Northeastern University
University Of Massachusetts - Amherst

bump.....anyone?

Clemson (USNWR 61), used to be for kids who tried to get into Georgia Tech engineering or Georgia ag school, but didn't. Number 2 on USNWR's up-and-coming national universities.

NC State (83), slightly lower ranked than Clemson, but much the same sort of school. NC State used to be considered better school than Clemson. Clemson and NC State have John Edwards in common.

Va Tech (71), same sort of school as Clemson and NC State. Ranked in between.

Purdue (66), same sort of school, but in the mid-west.

Pittsburgh (58), Tony Dorsett. More of a comprehensive university than Purdue and the southern schools.

Northeastern (96), I had a law school classmate from Northeastern, funny guy, thoroughly Yankee.

UMass (102) the least prestigious of the lot; one of those, you know, "northern schools."

I dont think he asked about their rankings...

UMass: Positive- they have a hockey team, best sports management program in the country Negative- The hockey team is not great, and the UMass students show up to games drunk

Northeastern: Positive- they have a hockey team with great fan support Negative- No football team, hockey team never seems to do well, five year program

thanks Senior's Dad and diontechristmas,

I am also planning on majoring in engineering

anybody else wanna add to my pros/cons list of the above colleges?

If you get into Va Tech for engineering, that's tough to beat.

I live in Mass and know a bunch of kids at UMass ("ZooMass").
Most of the people who go there love it, but if you're looking for a school where you want a very personalized experience, then UMass isn't the place. It's very easy to become a number there, but if you really pursue your interests, UMass can offer pretty much anything to you. There are huge parties every night, so depending on what you're in to, it might be difficult to overcome the urge to party for the sake of school work.

bump....10char

The other engineering school that stands out in that list is Purdue. If you like sports then a Big Ten school is a good choice.

thanks diontechristmas, LHS2009, and Erin's Dad. Anyone have anything else to say about the schools I applied to?

Pitt-AMAZING for pre-med(attached to UPMCs) and pretty good for everything else, not incredible though. Kind of a cruddy campus, but really getting fixed up

rocket6louise, that's kind of the feeling im getting, im kinda scared that engineering majors might not get as much attention at Pitt compared to the biology/chem/physics/pre-med majors

One of the reasons that I applied to these schools is that I like the big school environment and (don't tell my parents), I can't imagine not going to a school with Division1 sports next year

College students show up to sporting events drunk? I find this shocking.

lol that is surprising dilksy, I thought the legal drinking age was 21 hahahaha

Northeastern really has no campus feeling as some of the others, but Boston is a great city if you want that.

I sense sarcasm...

Do you have a preference of location as far as rural/urban. Clemson and Va. Tech are in more rural areas while the others are in bigger towns/cities.

My family's experience (DH and S1) with NCSU has been very positve. S1 will grad. in May and has had a great four years.

All the people I know who went to Clemson really loved it there also.

haha me too

anyone else? How about NC State?

Engineering is a very, very rigorous major and often takes its toll on kids, either by dropping out or by taking more than 4 years to complete.

Its a question of what you want in a total college experience. I think NCSU is a powerhouse engineering school, followed closely by Clemson and Va. Tech.

I am partial to Va. Tech, but that is just my personal preference and what I like in a school.

Purdue is very well known and respected in engineering as is Pitt. UMass and Northeastern I can't help you frankly, so I wont offer a comment.

And of course it all depends on where you get in and what the financial picture looks like.

Good luck.

so it seems like clemson, virginia tech and purdue should be the schools that I should be considering? I've heard lots of nice things about Clemson too except I don't know how they react to northerners in the South.
