I wonder how people define 'prestigious colleges'. Does it have to do with US News Ranking?

In short, yes.

So up to what number in US News Ranking?

People on CC care way too much about "prestige"

Although I would agree that people on CC are a little obsessive with prestige (i'm probably one of them), I understand why though. Schools that are more well known have the biggest endowments, which means that they are able to provide their students with more opportunties. There is no harm in wanting to know what school can provide you a more secure future, although you can succeed anywhere you go.

In general, the Ivy League plus "CC Top Universities" would cover it, I think.

No way. You don't care enough.

It varies from person to person...probably anywhere around the top 15 - 25 schools.

I just asked this, not because I care about this prestigous business, but that I will be going to Cornell, and I wondered if the people who are obsessed with prestigious colleges would think that Cornell is prestigious enough for them :)

Why exactly does prestige matter? As long as you work hard and are passionate about what you do you will be successful in life.

Cornell is definitely prestigious enough. Don't worry, it's one the most prestigious universities in the country/world.

I dont think prestige corresponds to us news rank...

i would think georgetown is a hell of a lot more prestigious than emory or such.

Even georgetown is certainly in top 50, so it will make it quite prestigious. I just didn't apply to georgetown, because they did not have "online application" :( I had to download the app. and fill it out, which I did not want to for some reasons.

it bothers me that BC is not in CCs top universities. ::growl::

there are schools not in that "top university" category that would go in way before bc pongo... :-P

death to you, jags86. death. ;)

"People on CC care way too much about 'prestige'"

It's not just CC, it's society...

Plus the rankings don't necessarily correspond with prestige.
For example everyone knows what USC is here, but don't know what Princeton is (my reaction: omfg!!).
