For Math 53 it is Calculus: Early Transcendentals, by Stewart (http://math.berkeley.edu/courses_lowerdivcourses_math53.html). For CS 61A it is Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs. Version number will likely matter for the Math 53 book, since problems often change between versions. The 61A book is available free online, so you could use an old version for reference and just look up the latest versions of problems in case they've changed.

Hi thanks for responding. Just a random question: will I be able to sign up for Math 53 even if I end up with a B or even a C in Calculus 1B taken through CSU Fullerton? I didn't bother with the Calc BC test. My orignal belief was that the aforementioned calculus book could be used in Math 1B too; however, apparently version numbers do matter so if I purchase the 4th edition (for math 53) but get shafted to Math 1B which uses the 5th edition, I'll have wasted a bunch of money.

You can sign up for whatever you want. Nobody will stop you. You can jump to Math 110A if you want...but I wouldn't recommend it. It doesn't make sense that 1A and 1B would use the 5th edition while 53 would use the 4th. The site may be out of date. I can't remember what version was used in my class, and I don't have my book handy to check. You can try e-mailing the professor you could just wait until the first week of class to buy the book.

yeah you were right; turns out the info in that link was out of date. is this the book i need for 53? :

seems kind of cheap to me. and what does the "custom math 53" mean?

thanks for your help
