What are the requirements for University of British Columbia?

Hi, I’m currently an international student in the US. I’m interested in UBC. I wonder what are the min requirement for US student as well as international student. What is the range of SAT scores can be considered safety? I got 1200 last time, I’m planning to take it again on Dec. However, I took few AP courses in school (Phyics, Chem, Euro his, Psycho and Calc AB). My unweighted GPA last year is 3.7 and weight GPA is 4.2. I participated in some sports (like cheer and softbal), clubs in my school. I know UBC is a hard school. Is there any recommendations for me to improve my academic grounding to apply for UBC. Thank you so much.

The minimum requirements depend on which program you are applying to. CS and engineering are much harder to get into than humanities, for example.

Your GPA seems fine. UBC doesn’t specify a minimum required SAT but I suspect it’s similar to U of T which specifies 1300 as a minimum. 1450 would be close to safety, but it depends on the program.

Make sure you check out the high school course requirements. http://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/international-highschools-requirements/#united-states

Crude estimates:

Arts:
SAT - 1160-1220 reach, 1230-1290 high match, 1300-1370 low match, 1380+ safety
GPA - 3.2-3.29 UW reach, 3.3-3.54 high match, 3.55-3.74 low match, 3.75 safety

Science, Commerce, Engineering:
SAT - 1240-1310 reach, 1320-1380 high match, 1390-1480 low match, 1490+ safety
GPA - 3.4-3.59 reach, 3.6-3.79 high match, 3.8-3.94 low match, 3.95+ safety

Apparently, I’ve heard that only the top four grades are used, and that only grade 12 grades are used unless you do early action. NOTE that this could be WRONG!!!

Example transcript:

Semester 1:
Calculus 12: A
History 12: B
P.E.: A
Economics: A
Computer Science: A
Statistics: A

Semester 2:
English 12: A (interim)
Physics 12: A (interim)
Chemistry 12: A (interim)
Spanish: B (interim)
Psychology: A (interim)
Music: A (interim)

If you’re an arts student, you’d have English, and likely Calculus, Economics, and Psychology used.
If you’re a science student, you’d have English, Calc (or Precalc–IDK if Calc can be used in place of Precalc), Chem, and Physics used.
If you’re a commerce student, you’d probably have English, Calculus (or Precalc–IDK again), Economics, and some other A course used.

EDIT: It seems as though my Arts used the following courses according to the degree navigator:
CALC 012 (AP Calc AB without exam score): 90 (A and A+ (which I managed to get by 0.05%))
MATH 012 (Precalculus): 87 (A and A)
LANG 012 (Japanese Language and Culture): 95 (A+)
BIOL 011 (Biology): 77 (B+ and B)
CHEM 011 (Chemistry): 87 (A and A)

thank for your help. Do you think I can apply in Music major then transfer to science department later? I’m still waiting for my Dec SAT. I’m hopeless since my SAT is kinda low.

I would say so, although Music requires a portfolio. It may be better to apply to Arts/LFS/Forestry then transfer into Science.

I would say a 1460+ with at least a 720 in each section would give a strong chance for Science. Then again, an 800 in math and 690 in EBRW (1490 total) is probably safe too.

I got into Arts with a 3.8/4 (semester system) UW&W GPA in grade 12 and a 1390 on the SAT (780M, 610EBRW, 6R-4A-6W essay). Note that I intend to major in mathematics within Arts.

Thank for your helpful tips. I gave it a shot. Today I received the acceptance letter from UBC!!! omggggg

@Hazel99 Hi, what SAT score did you get accepted with? Also, what faculty did you get accepted to? Thanks.
