I am confused as to what I am supposed to do to apply for financial aid.

Can someone list the steps?

I know I have to make a CSS profile and send it to the colleges but does every college support CSS profile? When do I do the FAFSA? What else do I have to do?

Go to the top of this section and look for the above. It is LOADED with information about the financial aid process. Read that first then come back with questions.

Re: what schools require…each school’s website has very specific info about what financial aid application forms are required and the DEADLINES for those and any supporting info. Don’t miss the DEADLINES.

Check each college. They are all different.

There are only around 300 colleges that use the Profile. You can find the list here:

https://profileonline.collegeboard.com/prf/PXRemotePartInstitutionServlet/PXRemotePartInstitutionServlet.srv

The 2011/12 FAFSA will be available after January 1st and you should complete it as soon as possible. Every school lists their financial aid application requirements on their website - follow them to the letter, and make sure you file FAFSA, Profile, and/or their own FA forms by the priority deadline. Those are generally very strict dates and you will find it difficult to get financial aid (other than loans) if you miss them.

There are plenty of good websites that explain all the aspects of financial aid. I like these two:

[Student Aid on the Web](http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/index.jsp)

[FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>http://www.finaid.org/)
