Hey everyone. I've begun to look at Fordham more seriously within the past few months. I really want to go to college in NYC. I've heard that NYU isn't the greatest experience ever, and Columbia and Barnard may be too competitive for me. I have a few questions about Fordham. I know this can't take the place of a visit or anything, but the more information you have, the more powerful you are, I suppose.
So...
My main question is, what are the people like? I would hope for people who are seriously committed to their studies (not afraid to participate, study hard, etc) during the week but able to relax and have lots of fun come Friday. I've heard NYU can be too loose and Columbia is too uptight, so perhaps Fordham is a perfect blend? But I could be wrong, don't be afraid to share your opinion with me!

Related to the above, if you were forced to sterotype the majority of the people, what would you call them? (Sporty? Artsy? Party-esque? Geeky?)

In addition, what are opportunies like after graduation? I'm hoping to do some internships and/or graduate school and/or seek a career. Is is super competitive among other grads, or does Fordham speak for itself?

Thanks for reading this lengthy post! I tried looking, but if there are other threads you could direct me to that I could read that would be great! :)

Like most colleges, there is a huge range of “types” at Fordham. My S is hard working academically but he also has a busy social life and is involved in a number of extracurricular activities. He has found a really nice group of similarly-minded friends at Fordham. My S lived in the wellness dorm during his freshman year which for him was a great choice (but its not for everyone). From what I hear, there is are students at Fordham who are big drinkers etc. as well. I don’t think there is one stereotype for the whole campus.
In terms of work opportunities, my S in the business school and had an internship last summer and has one already lined up for this coming summer.
The best advice is to try to visit the school and see if it feels right to you. Good luck.

I would just like to add that you have two different campuses with two different identities at Fordham…Rose Hill in the Bronx and Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Some programs will determine which campus you must attend such as Gabelli Business is only at Rose Hill and Theatre is only at Lincoln Center, etc. But if the programs you are interested in are offered at both campuses, you will need to determine what type of college experience you are looking for as well to see where you fit best. RH offers the traditional campus and college experience. LC does not and not to stereotype the entire student body, but it does seem to have a large percentage of independent, artistic/creative types. Like any college, you can find “your people” at either campus! There are strong students at both campuses and many are able to have a very full social life in spite of the demands of their coursework. Additionally, opportunities for internships, grad school admissions/job placement are plentiful whether you attend either campus. Good luck! :)
