I went on a tour of emerson a few months ago. I saw a lot of the students smoking. I was wanted to know what the students were like, does everyone smoke? I know its very artsy but what do they students do on weekends, etc...

Take a look at the Emeron 2012 and Emerson 1013 Facebook groups. You will see a lot of different students and they're definitely NOT all smokers.

I must have been there the same time you were, because I noticed the same thing. I even asked my D, do you think we are just seeing so many people smoke because they have to stand outside the door to smoke and they are all here, or do most of the students at Emerson smoke? I also couldn’t get a read on what students do for leisure or fun, seems like when we asked we were told the students were so busy with their courses and such, their time was spent just on Emerson activities. My D ultimately decided to go elsewhere.

soccerguy120,
Santosfan is right. Emerson has many students that aren’t afraid to be different. Facebook groups are a great way to meet current students and get a sense of what they are like. But, don’t judge a book by it’s cover. Many colleges have students who smoke heavily, and I mean MANY. However, I have never heard of Emerson as being one of them. Emerson has a very contained campus and therefore, as jptmom said, it can be easy to think there are a lot of smokers, when really they are just all in one place. I could be wrong, but I know many students that have gone to Emerson and have never said anything about the amount of smokers.
In terms of what students do for fun, Emerson students are always busy. Not only in their courses, but in the large amount of clubs that they all join. They are very dedicated to anything they are a part of, which is what makes them so busy. But, I know a lot of students who find their leisure time in going to these clubs. For Emerson students, sometimes being busy is exactly the kind of fun you are looking for. It also isn’t a big party school. But, they are in the middle of Boston. Emerson students often go together to the movies or hang out together in Boston Commons when it is nice enough. There is so much to do there.
Ultimately, what always wins out is your feel for the place.
Jptmom, I’m sure wherever your daughter chose to do was the right fit for her and I wish her the best in wherever she chose to go!
Good luck to all!
