<p>I don't have the ranking you want but I just did some research online and these schools seem to be considered favorably for graduate schools in Art History:</p>

<p>Soozie's list is comprehensive. Just for a guideline I went through the faculty at Williams and found that 15 professors got their PhD's at 11 different schools, almost all on the list above. </p>
<p>I think that individual programs focus on different style/era specialties so a good starting point would be to find an expert on the faculty who has written in the student's field of interest or a curator at a nearby museum with work that relates.</p>
<p>I would also point out that art history PhD programs require a working knowledge, i.e. technical reading ability, in German AND French (or another language that applies to your field e.g. Chinese or Japanese if you're an Asian specialist). </p>
<p>Another option is to start with a Masters which is offered at about a dozen schools. This is a common prelude to the full PhD.</p>
