Which classes require significantly more effort than others?
The way I view a weed out class is a class where they’re not really trying to teach the material well because they want to force some kids out. The only ones I took that I took like that were Orgo (Chem 210 I think) and EECS 280. Some classes other than those are hard, but they weren’t as structured against you as those two were.
STEM-wise, I hear a lot of people complain about Math 116/215 (Calc II/III), Chem 210/215 (Orgo I/II), and Physics 140/240. I personally thought calc and orgo were not bad at all, and I took physics back in high school so I don’t really have firsthand experience, but I think 240 is genuinely tough. I do agree that they are weed out classes though.
@attribute I’m not sure if you are in LSA or Engineering. The LSA AP credit guide says that AP Physics counts for Physics 139, is that equivalent to 140&141?
^ I think it depends on which AP Physics you are talking about. AP Physics C should be equivalent to 140/141 if my memory serves.
My D took Math 215 and Chem 210 in her first semester as freshmen there. They are not that bad although they are definitely not easy classes either. Physics 240 should be tough and many students took it at community college over the summer instead.
@hpflstdnt‌ I’m a sophomore in engineering. I took AP Physics C which counted for 140/141/240/241. Definitely happy that I took it in high school because they seem to be weed-out classes here. A lot of people do take 240 (and sometimes even 140) outside, but now Michigan is making you take an equivalency exam to receive credit if you take physics at a local cc, online, etc.
@attribute I have heard the equivalency exam started last year will be cancelled next year.

As long as you are pretty disciplined about studying and with keeping up with the material, you should be fine in weeder classes (i.e. won’t fail). That being said, calc sequence has a bad reputation here, physics 240 especially, orgo 1/2, and eecs sequence (183/engin101, eecs 280, 281).
@billcsho‌ oh really? I guess that’ll make a lot of people happy. And those who took it this year will probably be unhappy…
@attribute My D told me that after she talked to her adviser. She is planning to take the Physics 240 equivalent (Analytical Physics II) at WCC this summer.
@billcsho Is that common for students?
Is it common? Many students told me the same thing. Is it popular? Most students do not do that.
It’s definitely a well known secret. 240 is a @#$@#$ of a class haha
“Well known secret”? :-/
