What are these "other" expenses colleges include

This probably seems like more of a financial aid question but for those who have gone to college or are there right now, what "other" expenses can I expect to incur?

This is my financial aid situation at my college:

$24206 Tuition
$8433 Room and Board
$1592 Books and Supplies
$4865 Other Expenses

$24206 100% Tuition Scholarship
$6270 Room Stipend
$4980 Pell Grant
$2000 FSEOG

$39096 Total cost of attendance
-$790 EFC
$38306 Total Need
$37456 Total Grant/Scholarship Aid

Total actual cost for myself including EFC $1640

The only "other" expenses I can think of are travel, gas, car repair, $120 parking pass, insurance, toiletries, and social activities. If that's the case, that's basically like having $4000 to cover things that I've been paying for through high school plus my total actual cost. I wanted to get the university health care so having this money will be nice since the insurance is $1000 a year.

Please let me know if there are "other" expenses that I have overlooked

Are there any additional fees, such as registration fee, orientation fee, student activities fee, lab fees, and such? Or is that included in tuition? Laundry, but that’s not a huge expense.

Congratulations on the great award.

If you buy your books used or rent them you should be able to save a lot.

Keep in mind that part of your scholarships could be taxable. I believe any grants/scholarships that exceed tuition will be considered taxable income. I would post this question on the Financial Aid board to get a better answer on this. If necessary, you could take a small student loan to pay the taxes but you need to plan ahead.

Health insurance is usually required if you are not covered on your parent’s policy. That policy will also have to meet the school’s requirements.
