What are things people say about your major that annoys you?

Economics and Classics—> “WHAT can you do with that?”

My response? “Anything I want.”

Computer Science-

will you fix my computer?

is the most common. They should realize that CS really has nothing to do with fixing computers. I know significantly less than the average Geek Squad’er about fixing computers.

Psychology:

“Can you tell me what this dream meant?”

No, no I can’t.

“Oh, so you wanna be a psychologist?”

No, I don’t.

“Have fun finding a job.” -.-

Philosophy

“What’s your philosophy?”

Sorry, but you may have been misinformed about what philosophy is. It’s not a way of viewing the world. People just say “…this is my philosophy…”, but it’s not really a philosophy at all. Just an opinion on how they see things or go about life.

Then they usually ask about what a philosopher does or thinks about, and then we usually have a good conversation about things they never really thought about before.

Sometimes people just reply
“Philosophy!? Why the heck would you study that? Why not do something practical like business?”

and depending on my mood, I’ll either be nice in my reply, or make it my priority to let them know that they are stupid.

Political Science

“Are you going to law school?”
“Are you going to run for office?”
“How is politics a science?”

Then they will try to argue politics with me…

No one can say anything about physics that would annoy me.

mathsciencedude.
“Physics? So you wanna be a physician, huh?”
lol

Archaeology:
“You know that you won’t be like Indiana Jones, right?”
“So, you’re going to bring me back an ancient, gold necklace, right?”
“Does that mean that you’re going to Africa?”

Information Systems/Information Science:
“They actually have a major for that?”
“What are you going to be able to do with that?”
“Why not just study Computer Science? Applied Math? Business?”
“Isn’t that for people not good enough to get into Computer Science?”

I plan on working in a museum, and I’m not going to study in Africa. I’m interested in Southeast Asian Archaeology, so I may work in Indonesia. I do not condone treasure hunting, I’m an Archaeologist. I want to be able to work with computers at an advanced level and apply it to my archaeological research. Information Systems is interdisciplinary, so I can study computer structures along side business structures, which both can aid me in Archaeology. Finally, Computer Science has the same entrance requirements as Information Systems.

I knew I’d find your reply in here somewhere… :stuck_out_tongue: I’m also an RCAH major and the biggest thing I’ve received so far is: “What?” “…RCAH?” “So, like, what is that?” Also, I live on an honors floor, and everyone (since there are like four RCAH kids on the floor) jokes that we’ll all live in boxes and the Packaging major on the floor will be making those boxes. lol I’m tentatively thinking about business as something that I might be interested in doing as a career, but I’m not sure that RCAH and business will mix well, haha.

Agree with arcadefire1027

Social Work- why is that your major? your not going to make any money & 9/10 you will take your job home with you!!!

I don’t think anyone is that dumb. It should be the other way around because people tend to know what physicist means and don’t know what physician means. “You want to be a physician? Gotta know a lot of math, huh?”

Also, your username is delicious. ;)

thanks.
and ive met people that dumb haha

well, they were dumb, but it was probably just a slip

geography.

“oh so you want to study mountains, eh?” :O

geography is a major? no wai

for me, “so have you decided what youre going to do yet?”

im undecided at the moment, but even when i’m talking about majors i’m considering i get some stupid stuff. i told a friend that i was thinking about history and he said what are u gonna do with that, implying that he thinks i wont get a job. i just shoke my head because there are numerous jobs. The biggest misunderstanding people seem to have is that a major (like engineering) is intended for a certain job, a major typically leads to a certain job (bio majors going to med school), or the major has no jobs.

^^ YES GEOGRAPHY IS A MAJOR.

lol…another thing people tell me that annoys me about my major. ;D

geography is ****ing awesome

:) agree
