What are Vanderbilt's Academic Fortes?

If you don’t have to take Math at all, skip it. If you need it for your econ major, Math 140 is more than sufficient.

I am absolutely serious. It is 150a. It is a ridiculous weedout. Even if you got a 5 on the calc exams, you will have trouble in this class.

Well, that’s not true. I took Math 175 off to start, so I guess I don’t have the best insight, but I’ve seen my friends’ tests and they are definitely doable. of course, I guess I don’t have the best objective voice - ARML and USAMO and all that =). But at the same time, I think it’s mostly because people aren’t used to the type of teaching - it’s mostly proof-based. And thus, if you don’t keep up with homework (which is optional), then you don’t learn the material and you don’t do well in the class. This is true for pretty much all classes.

Listen to rupee2 and INVENIAMVIAM. They are correct.

^This is a bit … forward. Since I was the one who first brought up the math department problem, I obviously do believe that the math department isn’t very strong. However, at the same time, I just thought that it must be said that people DO pass that class… especially since most of the freshman take it.

D. is a junior at Vandy and had the same experience with Math 150a as a freshman. Struggled for a B- after taking college calculus in high school. Did not take 150b second semester as a result. I don’t know what’s up with that class but you hear the same experiences recounted year after year.
