What are you majoring in at Smith? Why?

for my D: Government and Math. She likes both.

Won out over Classics, History, English, Biology, all of which had attractions. She liked Classics enough that she took one year
of Latin at Smith and the Bio was attractive because of the
genomics/genetics.

Math, because I find it a challenge and while I enjoyed the classes in the subjects I thought I'd major in before arriving (English and Anthropology) I found that math was more fun, and that I'd rather take one or more math class each semester than multiple classes in other areas.

I'm going to work toward a minor in computer programming, but am going to hold off on declaring it until I'm sure I can fit all the requirements in (I'm a second semester sophomore and have only taken one computer science class so far).

Our D just got accepted this week. She will be studying Biology and maybe a minor in dance (loves ballet)

government, with a self-designed minor in Social Science Methodology (a bunch of statistics, econometrics, and also qualitative field methods).

At various points, I considered minors in math, Latin, Spanish, and religion, but i'm more or less satisfied with my choice.

Anyone know when construction of the new science building will take place?

Smith expects to break ground 07. There's a facts & timeline link.

http://www.smith.edu/newsciencebuilding/

This is interesting too.

Thanks RLT. There's a great site I didn't even know existed. Good reading, for sure.

Anent of which, I heard that the guy in charge of the current science building was very shrewd...didn't mind that the outside looks uninspiring, figured that that would accelerate any motion for a new building...apparently the new building has been a concept for a lonng time But the facilities inside are pretty decent.

In other news, BJM, I haven't read the article, but according to Murphy, the science building will be finished about the time your D graduates.

That's pretty much what we figured. After visiting, it appeared that the science facilities are pretty nice, and we were impressed by the science quad. We didn't get to see them in-depth, but from what we saw we were impressed. Nice to know that they're planning for the future, however.

Also, the old science buildings are not being excluded with the construction of the new engineering building. McConnell just had some expensive renovations done (beginning over the summer), and I think the long-term plan includes other science buildings as well.

Borgin...that's great to hear, as my D will be majoring in bio. We are so thrilled about her acceptance, we're still on cloud 9.

p.s. Must admit that D kind of enjoyed writing her thank you but no thank you letters to other colleges yesterday.

I'm doing a double major in Computer Science and Music...

Music is what I've always wanted to do with my life, but it's hard to find a job. There are some really talented people out there who don't make it, so that's where Computer Science comes in. I honestly think I'd be just as happy doing Computer Science. I've always been interested in HTML, web design, programming, and graphic art. Also, I love math, and Computer Science involves a lot of that.

Trumpeter

True about the music major. I have a niece who attended Hart School of Music at Hartford for three years before transferring to Bryant University in her senior year. She is a fabulous oboe player, and has played with numerous symphony orchestras throughout new england. She realized, however, that her opportunities for acquiring a final spot in any orchestra is rare at best. That's why she changed to music business management. Music majors really have to be cognizant of these issues, and usually have to rely on other means of work.

Also, great to hear of your excitement about attending Smith that you wrote about in another post. (I'm too lazy to go back and forth to talk to the same person). Don't worry about the party scene (or lack thereof), drinking is over-rated, and boys are like busses ( another one comes around every fifteen minutes or so). Enjoy your time at one of the best colleges in the country, and allow yourself to be a vital part of the community. There are lots of things to do at Smith, you just have to be looking. They'll find you when you least expect it. Best of luck!
