We can't tell if you do the IU personal statement similar to answering common app prompts or if you are supposed to write "why you want to attend IU" types of things. Any advice?

I think your personal statement should be directed to why you want to attend IU. It will show that you have researched the school and your interest in attending IU.

It is a a PERSONAL statement, so they want to know about YOU, not about IU, something that isn’t obvious from the application. Here is what IU says about personal statements:

Thank you. My child is getting guidance from school that says he can just use one of his common app essays, for example, but this sounds like it should be directed directly to IU.

I think it should be about you but there has to be some connection to IU. That is why with the common app most schools have a supplement so you express why you want to go to that particular school. I used one of the essays that I wrote for the supplemental essays on the common app and geared it towards IU.

Having just been admitted with direct admission into Kelley, my personal statement didn’t mention Indiana once, but I did write about why I wanted to attend college in general.

My D is a direct admit to Kelley as well. She wrote about how she became interested in business in high school and why Kelley would be a good fit for her. We did visit the campus 2 summers ago and met with an admissions person at Kelley, so she mentioned that as well.

Racquet dad, I read somewhere that you are OOS and your daughter got close to the max merit money. Would you share her stats? I’m trying to figure out what my son will get.
Thanks

I’d prefer not to be specific about her stats. However, she is a direct admit to Kelley and is invited into Hutton Honors college. She also had excellent extracurriculars, including leadership positions. Look on the Hutton Honors webpage for the GPA and ACT/SAT criteria for admission. If he meets the criteria I would expect the OOS scholarship to be near the max.

1214mom…My brother had 32 ACT 4.2 GPA and got $11,000 and $6000 from honors college. I had a 32 ACT 4.3 ACT and got he same award…we are OOS

Thanks for the info. I didn’t realize my son would be qualified for honors until I just checked it out. Good news
