I'm going to be a freshman in college next year and I don't really know what to take to school with me. So far the only things I've purchased are two sets of twin xl sheets and a twin xl comforter.

Should I take all of my clothes or is that not a good idea?

Take what you wear, including at least a couple weeks of socks and underwear. You should bring enough clothes to last a two or three weeks if you can, since it sucks to do laundry more often than that. A lamp would probably be a good idea, either desk lamp or standing lamp depending on your room layout. People are probably going to post lists and lists and link you to one of those comprehensive list things.

If you plan on going home a few times, take just the clothes you need for that season. You can return all your shortsleeves and shorts and pick up jackets and warmer clothes once winter rolls around. And then Vice-versa when it starts to warm up again.

I plan on taking the basics and anything I forget, I’ll just get whenever I go home for visits. I’m only going to be an hour and a half away straight up the interstate from home, so it’s not a terribly big deal for me.

Yeah, a lot of what you take will depend on how often you’re coming home. If you’re like me and not coming home til Thanksgiving, you’ll have to take everything right away! I’m taking all winter clothes and stuff for the entire year, except if I forget a few things, my dad will be about 40 miles from my college area sometime in September for a business meeting and can bring stuff to me then.

That’s all I can think of so far off the top of my head.

On my way up to UC Davis, I’ll be stopping by this Japanese discount store in San Francisco where practically everything is $1–I can purchase my school supplies there.

Wow haha I’m very overwhelmed but the good thing about my situation is my school is only about half an hour away from home. (I know not much of a college experience living so close to my family but the school offered me a lot so I chose it) The bad thing is that my parents are probably going to want me to come visit them every weekend at least then I can bring back whatever I forget to take with me.

I live in a college town. (There are six colleges here.) Anyways, I know plenty of people who live here and then “go off to college” and only go home for breaks just like every other student. Just because you’re close, doesn’t mean you have to go home very often. In fact, one of of the local schools has 97% of all students living on campus (seniors included!) and so the locals who end up going there still live on campus and have a normal college experience even though they’re only 10-15 minutes away from home.

Surge protectors are great! I also live less than an hour from where I go to school, but I only come back every couple of weekends, cause my boyfriend still hasn’t figured out the laundry machine thing and feels like it’s saving gas to drive home and get it done for free. Just cause your parents might want you to come home that often doesn’t mean you have to, but it does help if you forget things the first time heading to school.
