What are your college pet peeves?

^ I lived in a very small dorm last semester. So small that you could hear the piano on the first floor being played.

I wouldn’t have mind the piano playing at night if the person didn’t play the SAME FREAKIN’ SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN. Jeez Christmas! I wasn’t crazy about the song “Don’t Stop Believin’”, but now I truly hate it -_-

"people who smoke and kill my brain cells because i suffocate having to hold my breath "

I was once washing my hands when this girl came out of a stall and just waltz back into the hallway without even looking at the sink. Public restrooms are already gross enough, but people not washing their hands? That’s just sick!

I live on a ‘quiet floor’ so it especially makes me mad when it’s midnight, I have a class bright and early at 8 AM, and people are up laughing their heads off and talking in unnecessarily loud voices

people who think the entire floor wants to hear about ‘omg you wouldn’t believe what happened to me today!’ or whatever crazy situation has come up between them and some guy. The girl next door to us is so LOUD when she talks! I don’t even see how it’s possible to be that loud!

people who play their movies so loud everyone could hear them. Once it was so loud that I was singing along with the soundtrack

cars that don’t yield to pedestrians and speed through the campus

busses that never EVER get there on time!

people who smoke right next to signs that say ‘no smoking’

people who have really loud conversations in the library. My dorm is usually quiet (mostly just loud at night), and the library is usually louder than my dorm…

in the cafeteria, people who just leave their food or trash sitting on the table. Honestly, some people never grow up

roommates who leave the floor/rugs soaking wet after showering and never clean it up. I’ve never understood how one could leave a bathroom looking like it was flooded and then just walk away

Definitely super loud people at night! I could never understand how someone could start screaming - at ANY TIME but it’s especially godawful on weeknights or weekends at 2am - when it’s obvious there are so many people living in such close proximity to each other.

Didn’t they ever learn that trick from their parents? In which you measured the moral viability of an action on the “if everyone was doing it” premise? If everyone was screaming like you we would feel like we were in a cage of mutant howler monkeys 24/7. So STOP SCREAMING.

^^What’s funny is even though I live off-campus I still have to deal with that sometimes. My neighborhood is a nightlife hotspot, meaning on weekends around 2AM it gets pretty loud outside cos all the drunks are pouring out of the bars and clubs to undertake the hajj back home.

People who spend the time formulating what sounds like a thoughtful, engaging question:

“Professor, this a two part question. First, if _________ makes the argument that _________, does he not…”

etc.

And once the professor starts answering, they go back to looking at pictures on facebook. It’s like, hey, you’re almost there. You’re very nearly at the expert level of butt-kisser. But, you just need that last step of follow-through where you pretend to listening to the prof.

The second one would have to be noise. Does anyone remember that commercial, I think it was for Travelocity, where the couple gets to their hotel room and every time the guy tries to speak, a jackhammer at a construction site outside interrupts him? I watched that imagining that they were the noisy drunks in college, waking me and the rest of creation up stupid o’clock in the morning. Karmic fantasies, ahh.

People in general? …oh dorm life.

-neighbors who yell and scream and have obnoxiously loud conversations way past quiet hours (Quiet hours-10PM Still yelling-2AM)
-people who leave their dirty dishes in the communal kitchen sink, ew
-people who use my pots/pans (I do let them) but then DON’T clean it out
-fatties on the elevator who get off at floor 2, 3, 4 on a 17floor building
-a lot are related to the elevator and people getting off every single floor and avoiding the stairs at all costs (I walk all 17 at least once a week…and these are slow elevators that break, you know, all too often)
-hairdryers at 7AM or 8AM…not necessary, kay?

Bikers. 'Nuff said.

Living on the top floor and having a 10 minute elevator ride every morning.

Parents who call too much.

^^I hate people who ***** and moan and roll their eyes when I get off the elevator after one floor, even though they don’t know me and have NO IDEA why I need to do it. Not everybody who is disabled is in a wheelchair, *******s.

Emaheevul- THANK YOU.

All of you *****ing and moaning about elevators, you have no clue if someone is disabled.

I’m a (very) in shape person, but often have to take elevators rather than stairs because of a disability that cannot be “seen” by all you out there judging.

So get over yourselves.

When someone starts wasting my time with some rant about the ever-ephemeral, ever-expensive ‘college experience’, I want to practice some amateur dentistry on their mouth with my steel-toed boot.

Alright, alright…Sorry, I hit a nerve with the elevator. I understand some people can’t walk up stairs, I get it. But the ENTIRE FIRST 4 FLOORS can’t be disabled, can they? No I really don’t think so.
And sorry if we judge, but the long elevator rides get irritating after a few weeks…especially stopping at every floor. Or people taking joyrides on the elevators and then complaining when they break.
…and people who disregard the fact that actual students live on my floor. Yes, there’s a lounge in part of it, but the other part is kids studying. Don’t throw parties here at 3AM the day I have a 9AM class.

It gets really irritating to have to live with a disability and have people **** and moan EVERY SINGLE TIME you have to go to class. Do you have any idea how humiliating that is? There is an extreme aggression against perceived laziness that is constantly directed at people with invisible disabilities whenever they walk outside. My neighbor broke just about every bone in her body in a car accident and after YEARS of PT she can sometimes walk with just a cane, and people leave notes on her car when she parks in a handicap spot telling her that they HOPE she has a “REAL” disability someday because fakers are just so awful. This woman lives in so much pain she needs morphine just to get out of bed.

It’s not that I don’t see your point of view, because I do, but sometimes I am so humiliated I feel like I have to fake a limp to get people to leave me alone. And this is every single day. It’s extremely difficult to ignore something humiliating that happens to you ten times a day. Sometimes it’s just the right thing to do to keep your irritation to yourself. You just don’t know someones circumstances.

AJ - such are the joys of dorms. Next semester, get an apartment and kick the meal plan.

Ema- I’ve totally faked a limp when using a handicap spot on campus just to avoid some of the (really nasty) glares I’ve gotten.

It’s ridiculous how judgmental people can be if you’re disabled but not visibly so if you don’t need a walking aid.

Listen, not to pull the “disability” card but I’ve got physical problems too. So I understand what you guys are saying about the invisible disability that nobody gives you credit for. On a weekly basis I have to make up stupid excuses for this or that or whatnot…and I’m really not gonna go into details just to prove that it’s legit, you all probably understand how frustrating that is…ex. the fake limp
but I was just replying to the original thread; pet peeves. PERFECTLY HEALTHY people who don’t take the stairs a flight or two or people who jam the elevators. Not like I say anything to people’s faces…if I did vent to their face, why would I be venting on here?
And yeah…next year I probably am moving off campus. Don’t get me wrong, there are some pretty cool things about living in a dorm…but a year is enough.

How do you know that they’re perfectly healthy? That’s the point. I agree it’s obnoxious when someone fully capable of taking the stairs crams into the elevator (especially when I have to wait ten minutes for the next one when I actually CAN’T take the stairs), but since I have no way of knowing who can or can’t I don’t waste time getting annoyed about it. And I don’t mean to take it all out on you, don’t get me wrong, I am not upset with you or anything, it’s just one of my pet peeves when people whine and carry on about people using the elevator. :P

If they cast derisions, tell them that unless both the doctor and the state of [ your state here ] thought that you needed it, you would not have that permit. If they still cast derisions, so long as your mouth works, insult them.

If they’re joyriding on the elevator (“Let’s go to 16, now 14, now 2, aw hell let’s just press all the buttons!”) or especially if I see them in the elevator completely trashed (new pet peeve: wasted freshmen)…I can pretty much pass all the judgement I want. They’re not being respectful of the fact that I need to use the elevator so of course I’m going to complain the next week when they’re sober that they’re taking the elevator the first few floors. If they have a disability that won’t let them take the stairs, I don’t know why they’re pounding beers either and running around town at night.
You’re right though, except for those select few aholes, I shouldn’t blindly judge people who take the elevator.

I’ve never seen anybody do that, so I didn’t assume that’s what you were talking about. I thought elevator button mashing stopped being fun in elementary school some time. :P

+1 to wasted freshmen. I am glad midterms are out of the way so people are starting to buckle down a bit more.
