I am not involved in many ec's but I want to take part in more. I volunteer quite often so I have many service hours. I realized that I need to gain more experience in leadership, since the colleges I want to go to consider leadership qualities.

What extracurricular activities do you do and what are some things I could do to show leadership?

Chemical engineering mentorship/internship type thing at local plant (50 hours)
I’ve worked at McDonald’s since last June. I work around five hours a week during the school year and 10-15 during the summer.
I play the piano and take lessons. I’ve been playing for about 8 years but I’m not very good because I never practice. I’m not going into music or submitting a music supplement, so colleges will never know.
Scholastic Bowl. Started this year.
Environmental club. Sort of an offshoot of my school’s science club. Started this year.
Volunteer at public library (every summer since 6th grade)

Stuff I used to do:
School musical ensemble (last year)
Cofounded book/filmmaking club with other library volunteers. We don’t meet very often but supposedly we’re still a thing. I dunno.
Volunteered at Vacation Bible School for one summer.
Volunteered at Safety Town the summer before last. I wanted to do it last summer but they didn’t have it due to lack of funding.
Science fair last year. I did not place, despite there being only five participants. :o

I don’t have any leadership either, really. I don’t win club elections, and I can’t think of any projects to start myself.

Volunteer hours are my weak spot. I used to volunteer more at the beginning of high school but I never really kept track of any of it and its going to be a huge pain when I need to sort it all out for applications this fall…

My ecs are also very inconsistent. The break down is:

This year:
Cross Country (August-October): ~15 hours a week
My Job (November-current) ~20 hours a week
FBLA ~2 hours a month
NHS ~1 hour a month

Past ecs:
Track (January-May 2012) ~15 hours a week
Soccer (September-October 2010 and April-June 2011) ~10 hours a week
Reffing Soccer (2010-2012) ~8 hours a week, seasonal
International Club (freshman year) ~2 hours a week
Volunteering at church (freshman and sophomore year) ~2 hours a week

Marching band: I play bass drum.
Show Choir: I’m in the band and play the synthesizer.
FBLA: I’m a state and local officer.
Indoor drumline: I get to play mallets with this! ^.^
Academic team: Captain
NHS

Halcyonheather: I think you actually do have to fill out the hours for some schools. I’m not looking forward to having to figure that out, especially since it varies so much week-by-week. Especially for things like quiz bowl where I might study one week and then not the next.

Yeah, you fill in hours on the Common App, I think. I have some idea of how much I’ve volunteered but I haven’t kept all the records. It’s not that much because I always have to work when volunteering places are open, even though I don’t really work that many hours.

I have that problem as well. I don’t have many regular volunteer commitments save for my violin/piano tutoring and hospital escort duties. Most of my volunteer hours are random and fairly miscellaneous. It’s going to look like a laundry list.

I don’t do that many…
I do my own science fair research (even submitting different projects to different ones!) and participate in my school’s SciOly Team that hasn’t gone to states for two years. I am vice president for that. I also participate in an art club (Treasurer) and trivia club (bibliographer). I’ve been playing cello since I was six. Sports participation is iffy, with only two seasons of sports through high school. I have 200+ hours in volunteering.

Currently:
Student Council Executive Board (leadership)
Debate team
Business Professionals of America (I’ll probably get a leadership position by the end of the school year)
Asian American Club (i’m not Asian lol)
Freshman Mentors
Volunteering at Church 100+ hours
Tutoring Middle School’ers
